Remember my post called Ode to Czechs? Well, enough of us bragging, here is the other side of the coin (and you are not going to like this side). According to a recent poll made by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech image in other countries is not good. The participating foreigners see Czechs as rednecks who make sunflower oil and tower clock. Zdenka Kuchynova from Radio Praha further explains: “We are not a nation abounding with prodigy hockey players and gorgeous girls, we are a primitive country inhabited by vulgar and overworked hillbillies. We are cheap laborers and excel in the  production of sunflower oil and tower clock..oh, and we tend to get melancholic.” [click to continue…]

Do only crooks get to drive the limos in the Czech Republic or can  honest and hardworking people become rich as well? The 2/3rds of Czechs lean toward the more pessimistic outlook, claiming that the rich became rich because they were using dishonesty and shady contacts instead of their competence.

Almost 90% of Czechs think  the differences between social classes have increased considerably in the last decade, yet the smart, honest and diligent members of the society are not part of the upper class. According to them it is actually the crooks who took that spot.

What’s interesting is that when the same question was asked 13 years ago, 80% of participants thought that smart and honest Czechs could become successful in their home country (what happened?).

The 2/3rds of the poll participants would handle this unfair situation by taxing the heck out of the rich people. They  (1/2 of them) would also  increase wages all across the country. [click to continue…]

How do Czechs evaluate themselves this year? According to a recent poll about 1,000 Czech voters see themselves as:
- witty
- ambitious
- smart
- outgoing
- fun to be around
- pleasant

What is interesting is that five years ago the Czechs evaluated themselves more as hard-workers and rational thinkers (I guess we have lightened up a bit since then :0).

How do the Czechs see other nationalities?

A certain Italian food company made a poll in the Czech Republic regarding the knowledge of olive oil. The results showed that the Czechs don’t know its proper usage. Out of 628 participants (15 to 65 years old) more than half thinks that olive oil is good only for cold dishes such as salads. Some of them even do not like the taste of it.
The good thing is that 83% of the Czech population does buy it and uses it. But what is there to know about olive oil that is so important?
A/ you can use it for grilling and frying (it starts to burn at 210 degrees Celsius which is 410 degrees F)
B/ you should store it in darkness
C/ you should store it in temperatures that do not go above 20 degrees Celsius which is 68 degrees F) [click to continue…]

Ivana is a grad student from Prague who is doing her thesis on us – the Czech-Americans! She has a fabulous questionare for people to fill out so please, if you get a few minutes, contact her and let her know you are willing to share your Czech-American life with her….and help building the Czech-American history.

‘Hi, I am a grad student from the Czech Republic and I am doing a research for my thesis, which concerns the Czech-Americans living in the U.S., but I don’t have enough contacts for nice people who would be willing to answer me some questions. The thesis concerns the generational gaps in perceptions of Czech identity, so I am especially interested in how much of the Czech identity do you actually keep in your lives. So please, if you want to help or if you know someone who would like to tell me about the life in the U.S., let me know on my email ivana.stojankova@gmail.com. Thank you very much.’

I have always thought that decorating your backyard with light-up skeletons and graves is kind of strange (not to mention the electric bill!). Then you throw that candy-begging business in it and you get a holiday called Halloween. The Czechs and Slovaks have also kind of a scary holiday called the St. Nicholas Day, but at least the figure of the devil (who tends to scare kids where ever he goes) is ballanced out by the beautiful, holy and secret angel as well as by the Saint Nicholas! Halloween is like: “The more witches, ghosts, blood and dead people, the better!…and gimme some more eye-ball candy with that!!!”

I don’t ignore the holiday I am just little more mellow about it. I decorate my house with a bunch of pumpkins, dig out my strawman and pig out on candy. No skeletons for me – thank you! How about you, what do you think of this ‘holy-day’? VOTE!

  • the historical records of Czech beer reach all the way to 1088 (during the reign of king Vratislav II.)
  • year 1842 welcomes the birth of Pilsener Urquell, the most popular Czech beer ever

2. Czech glass

  • known for its high quality (on the home front and worldwide)
  • it has been around since the 13th century
  • Czech crystal chandeliers decorate the opera house in Rome, Milan’s La Scala or Versailles
  • 19th century Czech artist Bedrich Egermann pushed ahead the ‘crazy’ thought of glass becoming a new form or sculpturing material

proud Czechs image/ www.ceske noviny imageWith the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution the local research agency conducted a poll on Czech pride. The results are quite uplifting:

  • 78% of Czechs are proud of their nationality
  • 17% of Czechs are not too proud of their nationality
  • 5% of Czechs are not proud of their nationality at all

(Total of 1,270 voters)

More such prideful Czechs can be found among the student population and among the elders. The least prideful Czechs are among the those people who belong to the communist party (KSCM) and among those who did not vote and do not associate themselves with any kind of political party at all.

The STEM research agency have been conducting the same poll ever since the 1990′s.

CZ: Pri prilezitosti 20ti leteho vyroci sametove revoluce se pruzkumni agentura STEM zeptala 1 270 Cechu, jestli jsou hrdi na to, ze jsou Cesi. Vysledy jsou velmi optimisticke:

  • 78% dotazanych tuto hrdost pocituje
  • 17% spise na sve obcanstvi hrdi nejsou
  • 5% na sve obcanstvi hrdi nejsou vubec
