Czech NEWS

If you have eve been to the Czech Embassy in Washington DC, you know that it needs some work. In fact, the Czech government thinks it needs way too much work, therefore it is better to just level it with the ground and start over. The following pictures are early digital  images of what is waiting for us in the near future. Actually, I should not say ‘in the near future’, since the actual building process is supposed to start in 2014, so who knows when it is going to be done. [click to continue…]

A new EU poll uncovers some surprising data. The Europeans consider themselves to be young until they reach their 42nd birthday and call themselves old when one hits the 64th year of age.

The Czechs are even more harsh: a ‘spring chicken’ is anyone under the age of 40 and an ‘old hag’  is anyone who is 60 years old and older.

The most gentle people are the Dutch when it comes to age since they think one is not old until they reach their 70th birthday (I would probably have to agree with them). The harshest of all are Slovaks who will call you an old lady at 58! Now that’s just wrong…

Apparently according to the Czechposition.com the American movie Star Wars has been a great success in the Czech Republic. You want a proof? Just look at the numbers: in a recent nationwide census 15,070 Czechs (0.31%) identified themselves as the ‘Jedi Knights’ believing in ‘The Force’. That’s a BIG number!!! [click to continue…]

The icon of Czechoslovak Velvet Revolution died yesterday peacefully in his sleep at the age of 75. The whole Czech nation is in mourning, however condolences are being sent from all over the world.

Havel was a politician, a writer, a poet, and a world-known pacifist. He was a political prisoner for 5 years, who later become the last president of the former Czechoslovakia (1st term) and the first president of the Czech Republic (2nd term). He loved music and became a big buddy with the Rolling Stones, who played at the Prague Castle during his going-away party in 2003.

I did not know Mr. Havel personally but I have a feeling that he would agree with this great quote: ‘The purpose of life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave with a well-preserved body, but rather to slide in sideways, completely used up, yelling and screaming, what a ride!’

Kolovazy u Prahy (a small town near Prague) recently opened up a new attraction: A Museum of Socialist Vehicles. It exhibits car models made in-between years 1965 and 1988, which makes about 30 different models, mostly Skoda cars but also Romanian Dacias and Ziguliks. The Museum is showing off some Germany models such as Trabant and Wartburg but those are in minority.

It’s quite shocking for me but the recent EU study showed Czechs to be the biggest lovers of marihuana. Even countries like Neatherlands or Denmark are bellow us, together with Slovakia (check out the following chart). How embarrassing!

CZ: Je to pro mne docela sok, ale z nedavneho pruzkumu vychazeji Cesi jako nejvetsi milovnici marihuany. To, ze je Nizozemsko a Dansko jsou nekde dole pod nami me opravdu prekvapilo. Slovensko ma take mene zahuleny mozek nez Cesi – to je ostuda! [click to continue…]
