You have got to see this! This is a map of Europe according to Americans...TOO FUNNY!!! I have posted something similar in the past, so if you like this map make sure you check out the other one (click here).

Also, the creator of the map (Bulgarian-born, London-based designer Yanko Tsvetkov) made similar maps such as Map of Europe according to France, Map of Europe according to Itally…so be sure to check those out too.

Since a lot of Czechs and Slovaks tend to enjoy classical music (myself included), I am pretty sure this YouTube video will be a hit. This 3-year-old boy (yes, a ‘regular’ American kid, nothing Czech or Slovak about him) just fell in LOVE with classical music and you just watch how that love translated into his life:

CZ: Myslim, ze se vsichni schodneme na tom, ze vetsine z nas se libi vazna hudba. Jestlize se nachazite v teto vetsinove skupince, musite se na nasledujici video kouknout. Toto 3-lete dite (je to ‘nudne’ Americke ditko, zadne CS predky nema) se TAK zamilovalo do vazne hudby, ze misto hrani si s hrackami se zabyva necim uuuuuuplne  jinym…..

I have done an interview with the following Meetup group a couple of years ago so it is time to re-visit them and see how are they doing. For those who don’t know what Meetup.com is,  it is a social network of local groups with shared interest and/or nationalities. Once a group has an organizer, those people actually physically meet and hang out. It is not uncommon, however, for groups to break up because there is a small fee one has to pay  or people get too busy or some other obstacle gets in a way.  But the New York Meetup is still – after so many years – alive and well! It is not surprising that one couple in the group actually got married and now lives happily ever after :) .

    1. Why are you interested in being part of the Czech-Slovak group in USA? What do you like the most about this group?
Answer 1: I guess it is a natural desire to be among people who have something in common; in this case it is the language, culture and often even the typical political atmosphere in which we were growing up. Even though I think that Slovaks have a bigger need to meet with others than Czechs do. The Moravians are somewhere in the middle. Besides the CS Group in NJ we are also a part of the NYC Meetup CS Group because we live in Brooklyn. What I like the most about the NJ group is their home like atmosphere since they meet in people’s homes rather than in bars/pubs like we do in NYC. [click to continue…]

Here is a useful website for those of you who are Slovaks or have some Slovak ancestors…or have a Slovak girlfriend and would like to impress her by making her a true Slovak meal.

By the way for those of you who are not familiar with Slovak cuisine it is VERY similar to the Czech cuisine. Lots of potatoes and meat and cabbage and paprika and garlic and dumplings and grease. So czech out (or should I say ‘slovak out’) those Slovak recipes!

CZ: Jestlize inklinujete spise ke slovenske kuchyni nez k te ceske (i kdyz mezi nimi je opravdu jen malinkaty rozdil), mam pro vas vyborny link na slovenske recepty (klikntete zde).

    Dobrou Chut!

Today I am bringing you something on the lighter note. The following video makes fun of the state of the Czech health care. It is in Czech so I apologize to those who do not understand the language. In short, the Czech health care is going through some troubling times and a comedian, Zdenek Izer, is making fun of it. The patient in the video comes to the doctor’s office but ends up basically treating herself. [click to continue…]

Do you still remember how does fall in the Czech Republic feel like? It’s quite the experience. Yes it rains a lot and most days the weather is cloudy and grumpy but when the leaves start to change colors….that’s just magical. The My Czech Republic blog posted some cool pictures to help to put us in the right mood. Click here to see them.

CZ: Pamatujete si jeste, jak vypada podzim v Ceske Republice? Pravda je, ze vetsinou prsi, obloha je zamracena a sediva, no proste pocasi pod psa. Tu a tam se ale vyskytne krasny slunecny den, kdy muze clovek vychutnat svezest podzimniho vzduchu a ocenit krasne barvy padajicich listu. My Czech Republic blog nedavno vystavil krasne fotky prave techto nezapomenutelnych dnu. Posudte (a pokochejte se!) sami (kliknete zde).

Czech art is getting wilder and wilder. As the colder weather crept into the Czech Republic, the well-known Prague statues began appearing dressed in fashionable t-shirts and blouses. The group of certain Czech designers – who are the creators of this unique idea – claim it’s just another expression of Czech art but some argue it is a free advertising of their clothing line. Maybe they just felt bad for those poor statues who – century after century – freeze their buttocks off during the winter months ??

Vzdyt z nich kazdou zimu lamou deti rampouchy!

sablikova radio.cz imageWinning 6 medals – it could not get any better for the Czechs! Let’s do a recap:

    • Martina Sablikova (speed skater) won 2 (!!) gold medals, and one bronze medal
    • Lukas Bauer (cross country skier) won 1 bronze medal
    • Sarka Zahrobska (downwill skier) won 1 bronze medal

Sablikova, now the most successful Czech winter Olympic game competitor ever, is not sure what to do with her medals. Should she put them in a safe or should she hang them  on her wall so that she can be reminded of her victories every morning when she wakes up? One thing she is sure of though, that tomorrow she is going to start training again….to win more medals. [click to continue…]

baby-cartoon-clipartI am happy to announce that we are expecting yet Czech-American baby. The thing is that since I am in my early stages of pregnancy I don’t feel so good – in fact I feel like I want to throw up all the time – which greatly effects my writing abilities. I am sorry to say that I will not be able to write as often during my puking days so please be patient.
