lawsuit google imageI love this country but one thing I really find absolutely ridiculous are those lawsuits…Someone trips over a sand toy in a park, breaks his nail and all of a sudden there is a twenty million lawsuit!!!! (WARNING: this is a hypothetical case. Please do not try to duplicate that).

Here is an email that my friend sent me the other day. UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Just wait until you get to #1…..

Dekuji)! To neni mozne!!

Annual Stella Awards

For those unfamiliar with these awards, they are

named after 81-year-old Stella Liebeck who spilled hot coffee on herself and

successfully sued the McDonald’s in New Mexico , where she purchased coffee.

You remember, she took the lid off the coffee and put it between her knees

while she was driving. Who would ever think one could get burned doing that,

right? That’s right; these are awards for the most outlandish lawsuits and

verdicts in the U.S. You know the kind of cases that make you scratch your

head. So keep your head scratcher handy Here are the Stellas for this past

year — 2012

* SEVENTH PLACE

* Kathleen Robertson of Austin , Texas was awarded $80,000 by a jury of her

peers after breaking her ankle tripping over a toddler who was running

inside a furniture store. The store owners were understandably surprised by

the verdict, considering the running toddler was her own son. Start

scratching! [click to continue…]

You have got to see this! This is a map of Europe according to Americans...TOO FUNNY!!! I have posted something similar in the past, so if you like this map make sure you check out the other one (click here).

Also, the creator of the map (Bulgarian-born, London-based designer Yanko Tsvetkov) made similar maps such as Map of Europe according to France, Map of Europe according to Itally…so be sure to check those out too.

Since a lot of Czechs and Slovaks tend to enjoy classical music (myself included), I am pretty sure this YouTube video will be a hit. This 3-year-old boy (yes, a ‘regular’ American kid, nothing Czech or Slovak about him) just fell in LOVE with classical music and you just watch how that love translated into his life:

CZ: Myslim, ze se vsichni schodneme na tom, ze vetsine z nas se libi vazna hudba. Jestlize se nachazite v teto vetsinove skupince, musite se na nasledujici video kouknout. Toto 3-lete dite (je to ‘nudne’ Americke ditko, zadne CS predky nema) se TAK zamilovalo do vazne hudby, ze misto hrani si s hrackami se zabyva necim uuuuuuplne  jinym…..

I have done an interview with the following Meetup group a couple of years ago so it is time to re-visit them and see how are they doing. For those who don’t know what Meetup.com is,  it is a social network of local groups with shared interest and/or nationalities. Once a group has an organizer, those people actually physically meet and hang out. It is not uncommon, however, for groups to break up because there is a small fee one has to pay  or people get too busy or some other obstacle gets in a way.  But the New York Meetup is still – after so many years – alive and well! It is not surprising that one couple in the group actually got married and now lives happily ever after :) .

1. Why are you interested in being part of the Czech-Slovak group in USA? What do you like the most about this group?
Answer 1: I guess it is a natural desire to be among people who have something in common; in this case it is the language, culture and often even the typical political atmosphere in which we were growing up. Even though I think that Slovaks have a bigger need to meet with others than Czechs do. The Moravians are somewhere in the middle. Besides the CS Group in NJ we are also a part of the NYC Meetup CS Group because we live in Brooklyn. What I like the most about the NJ group is their home like atmosphere since they meet in people’s homes rather than in bars/pubs like we do in NYC. [click to continue…]

Here is a useful website for those of you who are Slovaks or have some Slovak ancestors…or have a Slovak girlfriend and would like to impress her by making her a true Slovak meal.

By the way for those of you who are not familiar with Slovak cuisine it is VERY similar to the Czech cuisine. Lots of potatoes and meat and cabbage and paprika and garlic and dumplings and grease. So czech out (or should I say ‘slovak out’) those Slovak recipes!

Dobrou Chut!

Today I am bringing you something on the lighter note. The following video makes fun of the state of the Czech health care. It is in Czech so I apologize to those who do not understand the language. In short, the Czech health care is going through some troubling times and a comedian, Zdenek Izer, is making fun of it. The patient in the video comes to the doctor’s office but ends up basically treating herself. [click to continue…]
