Martina Navratilova proved that she can move on the tennis court as well as on the ballroom floor. She happens to be one of the competitors of the famous show  called Dancing with the Stars this year and in her recent interview with the LA Times she explains why she decided to be part of such world. Ever since she was a young girl she was intimidated by dancing and since she has learned to face her fears straight on she joined the biggest dancing competition that’s out there to conquer her fear.

As many of you are witnessing first hand, the East Coast is covered in snow. A lot of people were left without power for hours, broken trees and branches destroyed numerous homes and caused serious car accidents.

But we Californians take our winter seriously too. As soon as the temperatures hit below 70 we put our hats and scarfs on, slurp on our extra hot Lattes from Starbucks and about 91% of the California female population puts on Ugg boots. [click to continue…]

Since a lot of Czechs and Slovaks tend to enjoy classical music (myself included), I am pretty sure this YouTube video will be a hit. This 3-year-old boy (yes, a ‘regular’ American kid, nothing Czech or Slovak about him) just fell in LOVE with classical music and you just watch how that love translated into his life:

CZ: Myslim, ze se vsichni schodneme na tom, ze vetsine z nas se libi vazna hudba. Jestlize se nachazite v teto vetsinove skupince, musite se na nasledujici video kouknout. Toto 3-lete dite (je to ‘nudne’ Americke ditko, zadne CS predky nema) se TAK zamilovalo do vazne hudby, ze misto hrani si s hrackami se zabyva necim uuuuuuplne  jinym…..

The first time I heard the song “Windows are open” by Amos Lee on the radio, my brain almost had a mini-stroke. At first it was telling me that’s the Czech singer Michal Tucny. But then, a few seconds later, the hard reality hit. “Wait, he is singing in English, that must be someone else!”. I restlessly waited for the end of the song to find out who the artist was. And that’s how I found out about Amos Lee.

The funny thing is that not only their voices are almost identical but the song has a very similar melody (especially at the beginning) when you compare it to Michal Tucny’s song called “Abych tu zil”. See for yourself and you will see! It’s amazing!!!!
CZ: Michal Tucny ma dvojnika!!!! Dokonce i ty jejich pisnicky (tedy alespon tahle) zni velmi podobne! Mrnete na vido Amose Lee a pak si poslechnete Michala Tucneho, pisnicku “Abych tu zil”. No nemam pravdu?

This is one of those sentimental posts again so get your handkerchiefs ready. Here are some of those top runners who back then broke almost every girl’s heart:

CZ: Pripravte si kapesnicky, jdeme si zavzpominat na hitovky z roku 1985. Kvuli komu ze budete v pristich peti minutach ronit slzy (nebo naopak dostanete zachvat smichu)? Tady je jen par jmen k pripomenuti:

  • Pavel Hornak
  • Karel Gott
  • Michal David
  • Elan
  • and others…..

Czech Republic is suffering with floods again this spring and it’s pretty bad. The following video is comes from Frydlant, a Czech quaint (or used to be quaint?) town in the north of the Czech Republic.

My 3-year-old daughter completely fell in love with Czech Elmo. I mean it is the same American Elmo from Sesame street but with the Czech voice-over. She likes the original, English-speaking Elmo too but for some reason, she thinks the Czech-speaking Elmo is funnier. What’s even more interesting is that the Czech Elmo sounds EXACTLY the same as the American one. I am attaching a YouTube video of both so you can judge for yourself.

By they way,if you are interested, the DVD series are called “Svet Elmo” and they are virtually not available anywhere anymore. I don’t know why :( . Fortunately one of my Facebook buddies recommended ‘ulozto.cz’ and I was able to download some of those series. These videos are great to learn the Czech language – for young or old.

I am sure you have already seen this video but if you haven’t it is a must (video is attached below). Vaclav Klaus, the Czech president, was caught ‘stealing’ a pen during a presidential meeting in Chile. Some viewers have become really angry seeing this movie, thinking that he is stealing the pen for real, which he is not. “It was a routine pen with a logo of Chile which is given to every president when he comes to visit.”, explains Radim Ochvat, president’s spokesman.
