The ‘golden’ Czech hands are making us proud this time in Boston. A 40-year-old plastic surgeon, Bohdan Pomahac, has recently finished a second complete transplantation of the face. Bohdan, along with other 30 surgeons, has done so in a record time of 14 hours. The receiver was a 30-year-old man who got his skin badly burnt while in contact with an electrical wiring. Today I am bringing you something on the lighter note. The following video makes fun of the state of the Czech health care. It is in Czech so I apologize to those who do not understand the language. In short, the Czech health care is going through some troubling times and a comedian, Zdenek Izer, is making fun of it. The patient in the video comes to the doctor’s office but ends up basically treating herself. [click to continue…]

A certain Italian food company made a poll in the Czech Republic regarding the knowledge of olive oil. The results showed that the Czechs don’t know its proper usage. Out of 628 participants (15 to 65 years old) more than half thinks that olive oil is good only for cold dishes such as salads. Some of them even do not like the taste of it.
The good thing is that 83% of the Czech population does buy it and uses it. But what is there to know about olive oil that is so important?
A/ you can use it for grilling and frying (it starts to burn at 210 degrees Celsius which is 410 degrees F)
B/ you should store it in darkness
C/ you should store it in temperatures that do not go above 20 degrees Celsius which is 68 degrees F) [click to continue…]

Julie Vasickova the oldest Czech person/ www.ceskenoviny.cz imageJulie Vasickova from Prusanky is officially the oldest person in the Czech Republic. She recently celebrated her 107th birthday and she is still kicking with a full force. Not only does she walk around (including the stairs!) and reads the morning paper,  but she enjoys her daily glass of wine!

Mrs. Vasickova was born 1903 which means that she remembers two Austrian emperors and all of the Czechoslovak/Czech presidents. She is the oldest of all of her 10 siblings, and the last one to get married. As a young maid, Julie opened up a grocery store and her busy lifestyle did not allow her to have time for men. When she married her husband at 35 they took care of their store together until the communist took it away from them (the store was nationalized under the name “Jednota”). [click to continue…]

Martina Navratilova www.people.com imageA 53-year-old Czech-born tennis celebrity Martina Navratilova was diagnosed with breast cancer. Since the disease was diagnosed early the prognosis to a completer recovery is excellent. “I cried when I found out about this. It knocked me on my ass, really. I feel so in control of my life and my body, and then this comes, and it’s completely out of my hands.”

The nine-time Wimbledon champion was fortunately diagnosed with a non-invasive form of cancer, called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which was confined to the milk ducts. Navratilova had a lumpectomy and will start 6 weeks of radiation therapy in May. “It was the best-case scenario you could imagine for detecting breast cancer,” says Dr Mindy Nagle, Martina’s ob gyn as well as her best friend. health care reform google imageAll Czechs and Slovaks are acquainted with socialized health care from their birth country. Obama’s bill wants just that, except it is extremely divisive. Strong majority of Americans want health care reform, they want cheaper insurance policies, lower co pays and deductibles. But the majority of them do not want Obama’s reform. It will put this country billions of dollars in debt and it also happens to be unconstitutional.

What do you think?

What do you think of Obama's health care bill?

Czech goulash google imageKaren is one of my frequent commentators, a very pleasant American lady who currently lives in Prague. She has a blog called The Empty Nest Expat and writes bunch of interesting articles about her observations. One of her recent posts is contemplating about the Czech – still rather unhealthy – cuisine. Read her thoughts in a post called “Who will be the Czech Jamie Oliver?”.

Clanek, ktery me tentokrat zaujal se pozastavuje nad – bohuzel stale jeste – dosti nezdravou ceskou kuchyni. Kdo Cechy vykoupi ze zaklete zeme brambor, knedliku a veproveho? To se muzete docist v Karenine clanku zvanem  “Who will be the Czech Jamie Oliver?”

bad teeth google image“Have you ever had your teeth cleaning done?”, asked a dentist the first time I went to get my teeth checked here in the US. “I think so”, I answered. He looked at me with a puzzled look: “You think so?” To enlighten you on this topic, back in Czech -  during communist Czechoslovakia – the dental care was not so good. In fact, to be more exact, it was terrible. I remember going to the dentist once a year with my whole class and – to put you in the right mood – let me just say that I would throw up right when my mom woke me up that morning. Why? Because I was terrified of that day! The dentists were mean, totally disinterested in us and God be with you when they found a tooth decay! How did they find it? [click to continue…]

colon diagram google imageCzechs together with Hungarians suffer the most with the  colon-rectal cancer – they are actually currently number one in the world. According to the Czech Gastrointestinal Society the Czechs have this type of cancer actually coded in their genes. How is that possible? The biggest playing factor is their bad eating habits – especially their weakness for very fattening foods – something that has been going on in the Czech Republic for centuries. Unhealthy cooking has been in fact with our culture for so long that it changed the genetic coding of the Czech gene pool altogether  and now we are paying for it (thanks a lot, great-great-great-grandma!). “If all of a sudden the whole Czech society decided to become vegetarian it will still take 2 to 3 generations for the sensitive genome to even out with the genomes of the other nations,” says Miroslav Zavoral, the vice-president of the Czech gastrointestinal society. leco image/www.czechmatediary.com imageLECO (pronounced ‘lecho’) is a delicious traditional Czech/Slovak meal. Since it has an egg in it I am afraid that most Americans would eat it just for breakfast which is a shame. We used to have it for lunch or dinner but never breakfast!!! If you like, you can ease into it by adding some American-style cilantro (blah!) or avocado (yum!).
