Czech TRAVELING

http://www.studyin.cz/Many of you, non-Czech speakers, have been asking me if I know of any good way to learn Czech. And I would always tell you that the best way to learn is to go to the Czech Republic and stay there for some time. And of course, the fastest way to learn is to go to a language school there on top of undertaking the long trip.

I was contacted by a lady named Jana who is in charge of a Czech language school in Brno, called  Study Czech and it looks very good to me. They have either 2 month-long courses, or if you cannot hang out there for that long, you can just do the 2-week intensive crash course. All of the teachers have many years of experience up their sleeve so even the least language-gifted person can learn :) . What I liked the most about the program is that they have a personal interview with every student to find out not only what language level he needs to be put in but also what kind of study type he/she is in order to find out what teaching style will fit him the best. I guess this month is all about new designs for Czechmate Diary because I came across yet ANOTHER article about an incredibly inventive Czech guy (check out the other post about cool Czech designs here)!

The first time I wrote this post I was really excited about it and wrote a lot about him. For some reason 97% of the article did not get saved so I am very upset at my computer right now and  this post will be much shorter.

Anyway, Bohuslav Lhota from Velke Hamry is well over 70 years of age and keeps busy by improving his   – I call it the UFO house. He has been working on it for 31 years and it is indeed a masterpiece. Not only that the whole building turns toward the sun to acquire the solar energy from it but it also has the ability to submerge UNDER the ground during winter months. Why? Because soil serves as a natural thermal insulator. [click to continue…]

Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, has a completely new attraction and it is CREEPY! The town recently opened up a new ossuary – an underground of a local church filled with thousands of ‘decorative’ bones. To be a little more precise, the church of Saint Jacob is a burial ground to over 50,000 people, which makes it the second biggest ossuary in Europe (the largest one is in Paris).

Most dead bodies come from the times of black death and cholera; those bodies diseased by cholera have yellowish skulls and those struck with black death have skulls with blackish tint. [click to continue…]

Everyone loves Prague. I mean, have you ever met anyone who didn’t? Even the prominent British newspaper Daily Telegraph chose it to be the 4th (!!) best city for young expat life. Listen to this: ‘Beautiful and only a short flight away from Britain, Prague offers all the stability of Europe with not requiring a new language, and it has the best beer in the world.”

Radio Prague also gives us some statistics to how many expats live there and what their nationality is:

  • 15,000 Germans
  • 6,0oo Americans
  • 5,000 Britons
  • 3,000 Frenchmen

Most of them are business people, teachers and students.

There is a little glitch in this Prague bliss however, and that are the Prague locals. Listen to Carol, one of the young expats:

The Girl in Czechland wrote  a nice post called ‘Five less obvious day trips from Prague’ and I thought since it’s spring time and people travel more, this would be a good information to have in mind. I have yet to visit a couple of those places she mentioned that I have never been to so shame on me!

Here is the list (click here)

I found an information on 2 very different museums that just opened in the Czech Republic.

THE FIRST ONE is the open-air folk museum in Straznice. Straznice is a small town in South Moravia, also called Slovacko because it is so close to Slovakia. The museum features local village architecture and shows the life in the past centuries. The local land has been altered to look like the typical countryside in the early 17th century, where the main building comes from 1612.

The houses in this museum are built from timber and the holes between the beams are plugged with moss and mud. Yet since they are covered with white plaster, they look like brick houses. The chimneys are also very unusual since they end blow the roof. [click to continue…]

If you thought you have been everywhere in the Czech Republic, think twice. Or rather look at these pictures and make mental notes which places you have yet to visit. They are beautiful.

A new and unique gallery has opened in a historically very important Czech town called Terezin. The gallery is called  ‘Kristalovy Dotek’ (The Crystal Touch) and the Czech minister of defense went as far as to comparing it to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. What exactly is it? It exhibits the hand imprints of famous people, but the hands are imprinted into the Czech crystal glass. How fancy is that?! [click to continue…]
