cockerel google imageOne day the cockerel and the hen went to pick some berries. Then hen found a strawberry, ate one half and gave the other half to the cockerel. In a little while the cockerel found a strawberry too but because he was stingy, he did not want to share it with the hen and ate the whole berry. Well, it got stuck in his throat and he began to choke. “Go and bring me some water from the well,” he whispered to the hen. The hen runs to the well and begs, “Dear well, give me some water for the poor cockerel. A strawberry got stuck in his throat and now he is choking in the courtyard. ” I can’t give you water until you bring me a scarf.” The hen runs to the seamstress named Anicka. “Anicka, Anicka, give me a scarf for the well. The well will give me water for the cockerel, who is choking in the courtyard. “I can’t give you a scarf until you bring me  some shoes.” The hen runs to the shoemaker named Matous. “Matous, Matous! Give me some shoes for Anicka the seamstress. I will  take them to her and she will give me a scarf. I will take the scarf to the well who will give me water for the cockerel, who is choking in the courtyard.” [click to continue…]

Last night I took a long look at our fat cat. And then I started thinking about how did she become so fat (we give her the same food but then she is getting older…) and that train of thought made me ask myself: “Who eats cats?”. Certain nations eat dogs but I had no clue about cats. So I asked my smart husband and he didn’t know either. And so we started a long quest that took us days to accomplish….just kidding! I am sorry but I just had to post this photo. It gives me goosebumps  and brings tears into my eyes every time I look at it! Why the goosebumps? It’s just a thrill for me to watch a running horse (I can’t even imagine the thrill of actually riding a horse! I would probably get a heart attack from it). Why those tears? My mind longs and aches to go back there, to actually physically experience the beauty of a Czech spring: the numberless dandelions everywhere , the smell of a fresh grass and freshly blossomed flowers, and of course the newly awakened Czech forest…

Now let me introduce you to Dorian, an exquisite black horse owned by one of my dear Czech friends.

No matter where you live nature inevitably collides with civilization. In California, where I live, we get to deal with stranded coyotes, abandoned hummingbirds, injured seagulls and dolphins. In Czech the mixture is a bit different. In the fall the natural habitat rescue places get packed with different kind of animals. People mostly bring in hedgehogs because they assume there is something wrong with them. “they try to rescue them, but if they left them where they found them, the hedgehogs usually find some place to hide and survive the cold winter months”, says the founder of a local Czech rescue station. What an average Czech Joe does not know is that the hedgehog’s weight is the deciding factor as far as his health goes. If the mole weighs about 300 to 400 grams then they should survive winter no problem. [click to continue…]

teacup piggies www.radio.cz image You can get this miniature pot-bellied pig  (also called a “Tea-cup pig“) for 500 to 5,000 Czech Crowns, depending on their size. The smaller they are, the more expensive they get. Yet the price did not stop them to be one of the new favorite pets in the Czech households. They are supposed to be smart, affectionate and very clean! Watch the video below:

albino doe /srna albin image The Czech ZOOs in Usti had an interesting visitor for a few days. An exhausted albino doe was caught by the local cemetery where she was chased and finally bit by some dogs. She was moved to Decin and became part of the animal crew that represents the unique geographical region of so called Czech Switzerland.

Albino does are very unusual in nature. Unfortunately, their unique coloring brings them much trouble. Not only  they are not liked and trusted by other animals but their lack of eye pigment causes problems with their sight and they are also very sensitive to light.

prague ratter google image I have seen these dogs around but I just thought they were Chihuahuas.Well,  I was wrong! As one of you guys informed me (thank you Lydia!) they are called the Prague Ratters and as you might have guessed correctly according to the name, this breed was originated in Czech sometime before the 10th century. Today it is one of  the smallest dog breeds in the world ( 7 t0 9 inches tall and 6 to 9 lbs) and it can also be trained to use a litter box! Check out this cutie-pie’s history:

Prague Ratter History

As the breed is really so old, it is practically impossible to trace its early beginnings. However, Polish chronicler Galla Anonym wrote that Polish King Boleslav II The Brave (1058 -1080) became fond of the Ratter. He had two that came from Bohemia (the Czech lands). The chronicle says: “Not only Polish blood but also purely Slavonic blood, donated blood, circulates in the veins of our dogs”. As the king of Poland valued this gift, we can presume that it was a royal gift from prince Vladislav II. The French historian Jules Michelet mentioned in his work “Histoire de France” three ratting dogs came from the Czech lands. [click to continue…]
