Do you believe in (Verite v nasledujci):

  • Area 51?
  • 9/11 terrorist attack was an ‘inside job’?
  • 1969 Moon landing was fake?

Then you are not alone. One third of Czechs would agree with you on those (and other) issues.

‘The idea that the world’s largest public powers have reason to purposefully mislead and manipulate  societal opinion had strong support, with 39.1 percent saying “yes” and 34.8 saying “rather yes,” totaling 73.9 percent.

Czech Republic is suffering with floods again this spring and it’s pretty bad. The following video is comes from Frydlant, a Czech quaint (or used to be quaint?) town in the north of the Czech Republic.

I have done an interview with the following Meetup group a couple of years ago so it is time to re-visit them and see how are they doing. For those who don’t know what Meetup.com is,  it is a social network of local groups with shared interest and/or nationalities. Once a group has an organizer, those people actually physically meet and hang out. It is not uncommon, however, for groups to break up because there is a small fee one has to pay  or people get too busy or some other obstacle gets in a way.  But the New York Meetup is still – after so many years – alive and well! It is not surprising that one couple in the group actually got married and now lives happily ever after :) .

1. Why are you interested in being part of the Czech-Slovak group in USA? What do you like the most about this group?
Answer 1: I guess it is a natural desire to be among people who have something in common; in this case it is the language, culture and often even the typical political atmosphere in which we were growing up. Even though I think that Slovaks have a bigger need to meet with others than Czechs do. The Moravians are somewhere in the middle. Besides the CS Group in NJ we are also a part of the NYC Meetup CS Group because we live in Brooklyn. What I like the most about the NJ group is their home like atmosphere since they meet in people’s homes rather than in bars/pubs like we do in NYC. [click to continue…]

I am sure you have already seen this video but if you haven’t it is a must (video is attached below). Vaclav Klaus, the Czech president, was caught ‘stealing’ a pen during a presidential meeting in Chile. Some viewers have become really angry seeing this movie, thinking that he is stealing the pen for real, which he is not. “It was a routine pen with a logo of Chile which is given to every president when he comes to visit.”, explains Radim Ochvat, president’s spokesman. BREZNICE, CZECH REPUBLIC - JULY 19: Teammates watch a colleague down a glass of Herold lager July 19, 2003 during a beer drinking competition at the Herold Brewery in Breznice, Czech Republic. Pub life and beer are an intrinsic element of Czech culture, and contribute to the Czech Republic's first place world ranking in annual consumption of beer per capita, at 156 liters, well ahead of second-place Ireland (125 liters per head) and third-place Germany (120 liters per head). (Photo by Sean Gallup/Getty Images)

What a surprise that the Czech Republic was given a second place as the drunkest country in the world! But don’t worry, we still hold the world record when it comes to beer (read the caption below the image). Here is a very nice image that may give you a feel of what a second place in this ‘competition’ might look like. Notice the beer bellies :) )

The newly built cottages in Krkonose and Jizerske mountains lack style . The traditional so-called ‘roubenka’ cottages (see image below) are slowly being replaced by grandiose Canadian/Austrian-style cottages (see image below) which do not fit into the Czech countryside at all. That is why the Krkonose National Park came out with a new handbook for Czech contractors to guide them on what cottages should they be building in such landscape. [click to continue…]

Remember my post called Ode to Czechs? Well, enough of us bragging, here is the other side of the coin (and you are not going to like this side). According to a recent poll made by the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Czech image in other countries is not good. The participating foreigners see Czechs as rednecks who make sunflower oil and tower clock. Zdenka Kuchynova from Radio Praha further explains: “We are not a nation abounding with prodigy hockey players and gorgeous girls, we are a primitive country inhabited by vulgar and overworked hillbillies. We are cheap laborers and excel in the  production of sunflower oil and tower clock..oh, and we tend to get melancholic.” [click to continue…]

Do only crooks get to drive the limos in the Czech Republic or can  honest and hardworking people become rich as well? The 2/3rds of Czechs lean toward the more pessimistic outlook, claiming that the rich became rich because they were using dishonesty and shady contacts instead of their competence.

Almost 90% of Czechs think  the differences between social classes have increased considerably in the last decade, yet the smart, honest and diligent members of the society are not part of the upper class. According to them it is actually the crooks who took that spot.

What’s interesting is that when the same question was asked 13 years ago, 80% of participants thought that smart and honest Czechs could become successful in their home country (what happened?).

The 2/3rds of the poll participants would handle this unfair situation by taxing the heck out of the rich people. They  (1/2 of them) would also  increase wages all across the country. [click to continue…]

This is truly  so funny the funniest thing ever! Chuck Norris is an American movie star known to the Czechs mostly from the 80′s shows like ‘The Delta Force‘ or ‘The Firewalker‘. His career in the US may have slowed down a bit but that does not mean that he is retiring. He is starting a new career in the Czech Republic! The Czech T-mobile executives tried to hire celebrities like John Travolta or Danny DeVito but since they turned down the offer the firm had to ‘settle’ for Mr. Norris. Not bad!!

I found one of those famous commercials on YouTube, which has been getting millions of hits from viewers all over the world.

Read the article attached and watch those videos - it will make your day! [click to continue…]
