This is a recent receipt from one of the Czech restaurants at the Prague airport. The person had 2 Czech beers, 2 pretzels, and 2 goulash soups. The total was 618 Czech crowns or  $38.63.

Does that seem overpriced to you or would you say it’s an appropriate charge?

CZ: To to je ucet z jedne restaurace na ruzynskem letisti. Prijde vam to predrazene?

The First Annual Czech Film Festival will tour major cities throughout the United States including New York, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, Washington, and Seattle. I hope you can make it to at least one of the showings and hey, even if the movie ends up to be not so good, at least you can say you went to the historically FIRST Czech Film Festival ;).

You are not going to believe it but one of you guys (thank you Petre from Austria!) sent me a recipe on a Czech HOME-MADE patte!!!!!! We already know how to bake a traditional Czech bread, make dumplings or even Czech cottage cheese (tvaroh) and now we have recipe for pastika (patte). What more can we ask for?? In his email to me Peter also points out that pastika has a huge potential because one can flavor it according to his likings. For instance, you can add walnuts, pears or even cranberries in it.

Enough of squawking, here is the recipe that comes from Peter’s grandma’s Czech butcher. Can’t get anymore authentic than that. [continue reading…]

If you are not a native Czech speaker, how does this language sound to you? Does it sound beautiful? Ugly? Funny? I researched this topic and found quite the opposite opinions – check it out:

CZ: Jak vam zni cestina, jestli nejste rodily mluvci? Zni vam krasne, silene anebo naopak legracne? Prectete si, co o tomto tematu napsali ostatni:

  1. My husband’s interpretation: ‘trishka triska trishka..’ (from the Czech riddle ‘Trista tricet stribrnych strikacek’ which in English is translated as ‘Three hundred and thirty three silver injections”)
  2. A blogger who has been learning Czech: ‘Czech sounded a lot like: Shhhptoschh TAK shshdilssstssh chtshdshchid TAK, TAK dshchidshhhptoschh TAK.’ (honey and peas)
  3. A lady from Yahoo Answers:‘I’m married to a Czech . . . just asked my husband to read something in Czech. It sounds like: rrrrtschchhh pshpsh tsee repeat ad nauseam.’ (yahoo answers) [continue reading…]

Everyone loves Prague. I mean, have you ever met anyone who didn’t? Even the prominent British newspaper Daily Telegraph chose it to be the 4th (!!) best city for young expat life. Listen to this: ‘Beautiful and only a short flight away from Britain, Prague offers all the stability of Europe with not requiring a new language, and it has the best beer in the world.”

Radio Prague also gives us some statistics to how many expats live there and what their nationality is:

  • 15,000 Germans
  • 6,0oo Americans
  • 5,000 Britons
  • 3,000 Frenchmen

Most of them are business people, teachers and students.

There is a little glitch in this Prague bliss however, and that are the Prague locals. Listen to Carol, one of the young expats:

If you have eve been to the Czech Embassy in Washington DC, you know that it needs some work. In fact, the Czech government thinks it needs way too much work, therefore it is better to just level it with the ground and start over. Actually, I should not say ‘in the near future’, since the actual building process is supposed to start in 2014, so who knows when it is going to be done. [continue reading…]
