flower house in Prague /www.idnes.cz image www.idnes.cz image

If you live in Prague then it is time for you to go into a battle. The Wenceslas Square is about to get a makeover of one of the historical buildings there and it is not going to be pretty.

The investor calls it The Flower House but on the preliminary images it sure does not look like a flower to me….it is a monster!! He must feel guilty about the look because he is promising the Prague citizens something unachievable: getting the square  rid of prostitutes and druggies via this construction. Well, it may get so far that when this monster is finished there will be nobody walking around! [continue reading…]

This picture will cool down your simmering summer brains a bit. I found this picture on line but the site does not give you any info where in the Czech Republic was the image taken. It almost looks like one of those fancy ice hotels, doesn’t it??

speech / global learning center imageI don’t remember when do native Czech kids learn to pronounce the sharp Czech ‘r’ and ‘r s hackem’ but our almost 6 year old Hahna is still can’t do it. I remember when I was in kindergarten I had to go to a speech therapy where they taught me how to say ‘r’ by substituting it with the letter ‘d’. So instead of ‘trenky’ (shorts) I would say ‘tdenky’. The trick is to say the word at first really slow, then increase the speed and with time and practice the magic starts to work and – voila – you get the word ‘trenky’.

Many times the process is not so easy and the kids are resilient to any kind of treatment. Well, any kind of standart treatment. One dad got supposedly so mad over his son’s inability to pronounce the correct r that he promissed him if he learns it he can yell the word ‘prdel’ (ass) out of the window every day at noon. And guess what? To the dismay of the neighbors it worked. [continue reading…]

Czech Target bagI went to Target today and my Czech sensor went off again. This time it was this cute eco shopping bag in a dollar section. Can you tell why?

Target is more and more starting to respect the fact that the Bohemians are slowly but surely overtaking the world ;). Next year  the Czech font will be the biggest one of all!

Czech prime minister Necas / Radio Free Europe imageIf you are following the Czech news even a little bit you know yet another corruption affair has taken its place. A couple of days ago the Czech police arrested 10 members of the Czech government (in the middle of the night!!!) and now the prime minister Necas resigned, admitting having his fingers in the corruption scandal as well.

Under the Czech Constitution, the prime minister’s resignation means the fall of the entire government, after which it is up to the president to name a new prime minister designate. All eyes are now on president Zeman who is he going to pick. [continue reading…]

Fujara is not some new action game on your iPhone but a 6-feet-long rare folk Slovak musical instrument from 12. century. It looks like a large flute with 3 side holes and a parallel smaller tube, which supplies air to the top of the flute. Cherished in the seclusion of Slovakian mountains by shepherds, the fujara and its rich spectrum of healing overtones were preserved over the centuries. Until recently the fujara was not known outside of Slovakia, where only a small number of traditional musicians play the instrument, and a handful of craftsmen there can make one. But now people all over the world are discovering beauty and unique qualities of fujara, and there is growing number of fujara players…AND you can be one of them (you don’t have to know how to read the notes)!

Learn to play Slovak fujara at the Common Ground on the Hill (non-profit organization in Maryland) from a Czech musician Bob Rychlik. [continue reading…]
