Brno – the captial of Halloween? / Brno – metropole Halloweenu?

Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic, has a completely new attraction and it is CREEPY! The town recently opened up a new ossuary – an underground of a local church filled with thousands of ‘decorative’ bones. To be a little more precise, the church of Saint Jacob is a burial ground to over 50,000 people, which makes it the second biggest ossuary in Europe (the largest one is in Paris).

Most dead bodies come from the times of black death and cholera; those bodies diseased by cholera have yellowish skulls and those struck with black death have skulls with blackish tint.

Most of you guys are familiar with a famous ossuary in Kutna Hora, but that one climbed down to no. 2 now (Brno being no. 1) since it’s a burial ground to ‘only’ 30,000 skeletons.

Ted si predstavte, ze kostel svateho Jakuba ma o 20,000 kostlivcu navic!!! To ho dela druhou nejvetsi kostnici v Evrope, hned po kostnici parizske.

So, who wants to be the 50,001 person on display in the ossuary?

I have to say from the photo it doesn’t look quite as artistic as the Kutna Hora bone church. But still a very fascinating piece of history so to speak. I’ll have to check it out next time we go back to visit.
