The second most handsome man in the world became a Czech guy / Druhym nejkrasnejsim muzem na svete se stal Cech

Josef Karas image / www.revue.idnes.czBecause it is mostly the Czech women who dominate  beauty competitions it was surprising for me to see that the male beauty competition was won by a Czech guy. His name is Josef Karas and was beaten only by one other stud – Kamal Ibrahim from Ireland. Josef is a 32-year-old fitness consultant from a Czech village called Obrnice na Mostecku.

Proficient in many sports and some Korean helped him reach the winner’s stand with no problem. ” Now I know what the winners of Czech Miss have to go through after they win their title. It means that one sleeps no more than 6 hours  and the rest of the day is filled with social and humanitarian activities,” says Karas.

Congrats!

PS: Check out his flexing biceps!!! 😉

  • Vonya Planchon April 6, 2010, 4:53 pm

He’s got universally pleasing features–balanced facial structure. But he’s not as rugged as I would be attracted to. Is he straight? Seems like men this pretty have to be a little bit gay.

  • Vonya Planchon April 6, 2010, 4:58 pm

Actually, do you know who he reminds me of? Richard Chamberlain–star of the ‘Thorn Birds’ the miniseries that came out in the 80’s. Here is a link to the picture of Richard Chamberlain:

now that you mentioned it, he does have some female features…you are right, beauty contests for guys are not exactly the macho thing 😉

  • Tom Blaha April 7, 2010, 8:17 am

Alright, so he’s a “face man.” Feed him some veprove, knedliky, and pivo, and he’ll look just like all the rest of us in the “swimsuit competition.”

  • Eva April 7, 2010, 9:19 am

Oh, so you guys think that if someone is pretty he has to be gay? That somehow the genes that make you gay also make you prettier or the other way around? I seriously doubt that’s true but it would be interesting if there was a scientific study for this. All I know is that not all gay guys are pretty (same for girls).

  • Eva April 7, 2010, 9:22 am

Beauty is very subjective, did you see the winner??? The Czech guy is definitely more attractive.

  • Vlastimil April 7, 2010, 9:23 am

    His biceps look weird….

  • Vlastimil April 7, 2010, 9:24 am

Vonya Planchon, I am not falling for this guy either 🙂

  • vlastimil April 7, 2010, 9:27 am

Men can be sexy and attractive and still not beautiful…
Simply put, men should be men

  • vlastimil April 7, 2010, 9:28 am

Tom, in a swimsuit competition my six-pack would as smooth as a keg 😉

  • Eva April 7, 2010, 9:37 am

You are right, his biceps really do look weird! Like implanted!

  • Jamie April 7, 2010, 2:28 pm

You said, “The second most beautiful man in the world became a Czech guy”.

In the first place, I don’t think most men are very happy to be called “beautiful”. You could have translated that with a better adjective.

Secondly, what was he before he was a Czech guy? Your headline indicates that he was something else first and then he became a Czech guy.

Be careful of those Slavic word order differences, such as, “This telephone number gave me my friend,” or, “This piece of cake isn’t going to eat anybody!”

  • Tanja April 7, 2010, 4:07 pm

Jamie, sorry but that’s way beyond my humble English knowledge. I try not to make mistakes and that is all I can do. I am sure people understand what am I trying to say here.

  • Tanja April 7, 2010, 4:08 pm

PS: I am sorry to be taking that poor guy appart but the more I look at him the more I think that he is a little bit cross-eyed?? Does anyone see it too?

  • Vlastimil April 7, 2010, 4:12 pm

Jamie, Czech and English are completely incompatible.
If you have time, would you find some weirdly written English sentences written by us and translate it to correct ones?
I am sure your help would be appreciated. I myself got into several funny situations because of this 🙂

  • Vlastimil April 7, 2010, 4:26 pm

cross-eyedness is sometimes caused by a bad metabolism and or insuline imbalance .. 😉

  • Jamie April 7, 2010, 5:36 pm

Tanja, why do you say it’s beyond your English knowledge?

If you say, “A Czech guy becomes the world’s second-handsomest man,” it means, “Druhým nejkrasnějsím můzem na světě se stal Cech.”

If you say, “The world’s second-handsomest man becomes a Czech guy,” you’re saying, “Druhý nejkrasnějsí můz na světě se stal Cechem.”

    Do you see the difference?

  • keith April 7, 2010, 11:22 pm

Eva-One’s genes do not make you gay. Homosexuality is not genetic. Has not been proven in any way.

  • Tanja April 8, 2010, 4:23 pm

Jamie I see it now. I will fix it.

  • Jana P April 9, 2010, 6:22 am

Hihi, I got to remember this subject-object thing pretty soon. I was at a farm in Wales when I was 13 and was talking to my fellow stablelads about the two horses I had at home. I told them that I ride the younger one and the older one rides my father. The burst of laughter afterwards taught me not to confuse this ever again : )))

  • Jana P April 9, 2010, 6:28 am

Hm… I guess I should really go through my high school english grammar notebooks again.. Some rules about direct and indirect speech particularly, looking at my previous comment..

  • Eve April 9, 2010, 10:33 am

I never had a problem with word order. Anyway, good point, jamie, but it is the most handsome, not handsomest, for God’s sake…

  • Tanja April 9, 2010, 3:32 pm

Ha! Good point Eve! Now we got you Jamie!! The word “handsomest” is grammatically very wrong!! No one is perfect 🙂

  • Jamie April 9, 2010, 6:57 pm

Sorry, I’m not wrong. Both the Random House Dictionary and the American Heritage Dictionary list the comparative and superlative of “handsome” as “handsomer” and “handsomest”. They likewise contradict many Czenglish textbooks and give “stupid, stupider, stupidest”. Neither dictionary gives “the most handsome” or “the most stupid”, as the Czenglish books tell you to say.

In Czenglish textbooks they frequently say that you can’t form comparatives and superlatives from words of two syllables or more, but that’s not strictly true. If you look at the examples of the two-syllable words that they give with “more” and “most”, you will find that they all end in suffixes to which “-er” and “-est” can’t be added to. It’s not because they have two syllables that you can’t add the comparative and superlative suffixes, but because of the suffixes the words already end in.

There are a number of two-syllable words that take “-er” and “-est”.

  • keith April 9, 2010, 7:07 pm

    Jamie-You’re such a linguist.

  • Eve April 10, 2010, 2:28 pm

jamie, “handsomest” is an archaic and rarely used term. It sounds as awkward and stupid as “voided check”. Not everybody is taught using Czenglish textbooks. I don’t know what your education is, but I hold a degree from Cambridge University and I graduated from two American universities, passing with flying colors without ever using “handsomest”. Actually, I have been studying English in London since I was 15, taking English language courses, so hopefully I learned correct English from scratch and while I was young. And I don’t dare to correct Tanja because it is her blog and she can write whatever and however she pleases.

  • Tanja April 10, 2010, 3:16 pm

Eve, thanks! I am sure if you did decided to correct me, the list would be quite long 🙂 But then again, if I focused on my mistakes and how imperfect my written English was, I would not be able to write anything because I would have felt so self-conscious!
Remember, everyone, a FOREIGNER is writing this blog!!!!

  • keith April 10, 2010, 6:25 pm

Eve. Uh oh. You’re taking on Jamie!? Watch out! Dude knows his stuff! I’m selling tickets to this one! lol!

  • Jamie April 10, 2010, 7:19 pm

Eve, “handsomest” is definitely not archaic. It’s you against the dictionary compilers, you against the British National Corpus, you against the BYU corpus, and you against Google.
The BYU corpus produces more hits for “handsomest” than for “most handsome”, although it’s reversed for the British National Corpus. Searching on the word “handsomest” in Google gets you just over a million hits, compared somewhat more than half that for the exact phrase “most handsome”. Those aren’t the results you’d expect for an archaism.
Thank you for telling me about your education. It’s quite common for people who are supporting an ignorant opinion against all evidence to slap their opponent in the face with their degrees. (In your case, the degrees must not have given you any particular language expertise, because you didn’t bother to mention what you specialized in.) I am also quite educated myself. Have you ever taught linguistics, by the way?

  • keith April 10, 2010, 8:12 pm

Coming from a graduate of UCSD, Mira Costa Community College, and most importantly the School of Hard Knocks I say, Jamie 1 Eve 0. Eve?

  • Jamie April 10, 2010, 8:16 pm

Keith, for some reason I think you’d get a kick out of this song:

    ha! funnny…

  • Eva April 20, 2010, 11:26 am

Handsomest sounds stupider! 🙂 Eve, I am with you!

  • SevenTears June 10, 2010, 4:19 am
