PRAGUE METRO – SURVIVAL CHAMBER FOR 325,000 PEOPLE!!
The Prague Metro serves about 1,5 million passengers a day, which makes it the seventh busiest metro system in Europe.
But it is a piece of history as well. When communism collapsed in 1989 revolution 14 stations with names reflecting Communist ideology were changed to be politically neutral. “Lenin station” was renamed „Dejvická“ after a surrounding neighbourhood. „Anděl“ station was known as „Moscow Station“ – until now you can find there several pieces of propaganda art promoting Soviet-Czechoslovak „friendship“ (Czechoslovakia was occupied by Soviet army in 1968..)
INTERESTING FACTS
The line A of the Prague metro is a giant “survival chamber” built for thousands of people in the case of a nuclear attack. You can see the giant metal doors at every entrance.
They can be closed in every station so the whole line including platforms and tunnels becomes a sealed bunker with supplies of water and little hospitals. It is rather hard to conceive, but the metro system could hold a whopping 325 thousand of the city’s citizens.
The escalator at „Náměstí Míru“ station is the longest escalator in Europe. It takes about two and a half minutes to descend the escalator if you stand still.
Between I. P. Pavlova and Vyšehrad stations, Line C runs inside the box structure of the Nusle Bridge over a steep valley.

Jen jestli ta ohromna vrata fungujou….Kdyz byla stoleta voda, tak nefungovalo nic.
The Prague metro rocks! Even the noise it makes is more attractive than the London tube. Here’s my post with all of the kitchsy Communist art at Andel:
