Recent poll showed that the two Czech songs which have become the greatest hits also abroad are polka dance “Skoda Lasky” by Jaromir Vejvoda and “Lady Carneval” written by Karel Svoboda. These two hits are followed by other folk songs such as Jetelicek, Cikanka and Slavnic polka, as well as Svoboda’s other hits such as “Kdepak ty ptacku hnizdo mas”, “Stin Katedral”, “Hej baby hey” and “Cau lasko”. Vejvoda’s polka Skoda lasky had become so famous – especially among sailors – that it received its own name: the Beer Barrel Polka. Can you guess how much did its creator get payed back in 1930’s?? He received only 150Kc!! That is not very much for the fact that it later became the everyday wake-up song to the Discovery cosmonaut crew!!!

Skoda Lasky neni ta jedina ceska melodie po svete znama! V cizine je jeste znama “Cervena Sukenka”. Je ji mozno slyset i z desek z let 50. a 60. nahranych v USA.
it is not true that only Skoda Laski is most known, the best variety music in the world in early 50;s ( abt 1955-1959) was SLOVAKIAN and CZECH hits -especially tango , as “MARINA” sung by Jiri Kuhar (or Zdenek Kratohvil) , “SLOVENSKE TANGO” sung by Marcela Lajferova a Ivan Krajicek, with the second-to-none orchestra leaded by Pavel Polansky; as well as super hits-evergreen ever today ,as “Jaj Zuzka,Zuzecka” sung by Francisek Krisof Vesely, female vocal as well
A.Farkaseva with her mob hit-tango ” Zo Slezamy v Ocah”-phenomenal JAZZ by Inka Zemankova , Ondrej Havelek ,etc – these TIMELESS music is good to the last drop also TODAY !!!!!!!

Can anyone please suggest some good music (may it be rock or pop or jazz) that the younger generation (college years or older) is listening to today in the czech republic? Any recent czech artists that are becoming popular? I am from czech republic and have not been back in some years and i would love to hear some good music to help me “keep in touch”. All i have found are classical or polka (which my grandmother loves) which are not bad at all, but would prefer something in the more modern genre. Thank you much for your help!
Hi Lucie,
I am 29 years old and according to my Czech friends that still live in Czech these are some of the hip bands in the current Czech music scene:
Chinaski
Anna K.
Meduza
Monkey Business
Posledni dobou taky Divokej Bil a Katka Knechtova. Ale jak jsem tak byla v lete na prazdninach, cim dal vic a vic americky skupiny =(.
No vidis, ani ty pisnicky neznam! To jsem teda. Musim si je nagooglovat…Diky za typ!
