Want to leave a comment on a Czech website? Get ready for a hard battle! / Chcete zanechat koment na ceskych webovych strankach? Pripravte se na bitvu stoleti!

Now I know why most Czechs don’t comment on my articles too much. They have been taught the hard way via the Czech media! Let me explain. The other day I was browsing one of the Czech websites to find something interesting to post about and I came across an interesting article. Actually it was a personal story. I liked it a lot and wanted to comment.

At first it asked me to register which is already a nuisance to me but I was determined to finished the mission so I registered. I then proceeded to write a comment under the article. When I pressed ‘enter’ this ‘friendly’ message appeared on my screen:
‘WARNING: You now have less than 300 ducats on your ducat account. Since you have less than 300 ducats you have earned the right to post 1 comment. You have already reached your one-comment limit therefore you cannot participate in this (or any) discussion anymore.”‘

– what the heck???

I was left feeling like a beaten dog with his tail in between his legs. But I wanted to find out more about these Ducat Rules and clicked on the link that the creator of this lovely message mercifully left embedded in the text. What appeared on the screen was even more unbelievable. I was staring at a humongous list of rules consisting of 18 points which I dutifully skimmed through. I then had two choices. Either I was going to find a babysitter for a week, lock myself in one of our rooms with a week-long food supplies and started to study the rules. Then maybe, MAYBE, I would be able to win some more ducats somewhere and then maybe – but only MAYBE – I would be able to leave another comment somewhere.

Second choice was to close that tab, shine the whole thing and move on. That’s what I did.

Až do překročení uvedené hranice můžete do jedné diskuse vložit pouze 1 diskusní příspěvek.

Well, I can’t read or write Czech, but I sure can tell that the ‘rules’ to post seem absurd! Too bad, it surely seems like it inhibits interactions and communications!

  • Karen March 28, 2011, 5:17 am

Wow! Were these rules created by a business or a government? Time is money so…so much for free speech.

  • Crystal March 28, 2011, 5:21 am

wow, that is interesting but not very fair!

  • Marika March 28, 2011, 6:19 am

I think forums are much better, but no matter how many times I register I can’t seem to use the forum here. It just doesn’t let me back in. C’est domage ;(((
As a writer I love to write 🙂 and talk!

  • Eva Z March 28, 2011, 7:39 am

Actually I am surprised that you even want to comment on a Czech forum. I used to try but then I found out that most of the forums turn into name calling and really nasty comments so I gave it up as it really did me more harm than good. And these rules you wrote about are absurd. Totally made so that people don’t comment 🙂

  • Vlastimil March 28, 2011, 8:08 am

After leaving a comment on a Czech website I have been called names:
    communist spy
    CIA spy
    retarded
    gay
    drunk
    zasranej emigrant
    “don’t drink so much”
“you should not be allowed to have children…”
    etc …..

  • Tanja March 28, 2011, 10:36 am

Ha – so I guess it’s a good thing I did not have enough ‘ducats’!
And I agree with you guys it completely discourages any kind of discussion. And that’s on a reputable website, too!
PS: maybe there is a black market where you can get more ducats under the table instead of earning them. I got to look into that 😉

  • Vlastimil March 28, 2011, 10:48 am

I am sure there are secret web sites out there where you can participate in discussions and nobody
will attack you . But they seem to be very secret :)))

  • Sona March 28, 2011, 5:59 pm

Wondering why they didn’t include a rule about how many ducats you need for a comment! I don’t think I read about that in your list. It’s definitely stupid and sometimes makes me question if the people who make these rules are actually sane! When you have a chance to leave a comment somewhere you may not end up with a good feeling afterwards because of all the other “awesome”comments yours triggers, and the use of swear words and calling “names” is something that makes me feel ashamed of being Czech sometimes :o(….don’t feel like this ever happens on any US website

  • Scott March 29, 2011, 2:14 am

Sona, OH it happens on US websites, forums, etc. I have been kicked off one for disagreeing with the moderator. Plus all you have to do is make a comment about some of the lunatics in US politics and you get BLASTED with a lot of hatred. Personally, I am an independent, but I favor workers’ rights, health care coverage for all (especially since my wife has brain cancer), President Obama, etc. I am often attacked by the far right wing, conservatives here who are full of hatred for anyone not 50+, American, White, male, and a lover of good looking women who run for office even if they can see Russia from their backyard and think the Revolutionary War was fought to end slavery ….. UGH!

  • Karen March 29, 2011, 3:22 am

I have found this discussion fascinating because I haven’t experienced this personally. All of the Czech people who have left comments on my site have been nice. Oh, there may be the famous Czech humor on display occasionally, but none of the name-calling your readers have described. Is that a holdover behavior from Communism? This part of Czech life isn’t obvious to outsiders!

  • Leni March 29, 2011, 3:24 am

Na iDnes asi nějak potřebují zvýšit příjem z reklamy…
This kind of nonsense is why I’m not registered anywhere on iDnes (and associated MAFRA owned) sites. But it is not the rule on .cz sites, as far as I know.

  • Vlastimil March 29, 2011, 7:23 am

Karen, I have posted a polite comment regarding your article about Sweden 😉

  • Katka March 29, 2011, 9:43 am

I know of a czech message board that is very polite, no name calling, just some really friendly Czechs. http://www.myczechrepublic.com.

  • Tanja March 29, 2011, 10:04 am

Katko, I agree with you I like that board a lot.

Karen, yes this is definitely an insider thing. Mostly because a lot of people don’t know how curse and talk smack in English 😉 I get the same ting here. Every time I get some really negative and critical comment it is written in Czech.

  • Vlastimil March 29, 2011, 1:45 pm

Tanja, now I finally know why we behave so well on this discussion board.
I happen to know some bad English words, should I give a try ? 😉

  • Greg March 29, 2011, 2:01 pm

Wow! I feel much better too knowing I wasn’t the only one being called names on thoe boards. I thought it was because I wasn’t born in Czech Rep. that I was treated as an outsider. if some of you who were born there get that treatment, I feel like at least it is an equal opportunity flaming board for us all. =) My self esteem was just boosted up a bit now. =)

    Vlastimil,

After playing hockey for so many years and being around the rough edged men, I think we both could fill this board with a lot of bad words if we really wanted to. =) We’ll keep our secret little society here clean though. At least one Czech message board on the web will be clean for our possible younger viewers to read and enjoy.

  • Tanja March 29, 2011, 2:45 pm

Hmm…I think my anti-spam plug-in would catch you and ‘zakroutilo by ti krkem’ (neumim to rict anglicky) 😉

  • Tanja March 29, 2011, 2:48 pm

I just re-read all of the rules. Those guys are absolutely INSANE!

  • Greg March 29, 2011, 8:48 pm

    Tanya,

Think you can come up with a few more additional rules than them? I thought the communists had so many rules. Yikes!!!

  • Marika March 30, 2011, 6:01 am

May I just say that I think the reasons for the name calling are two: people are ignorant and very fiery about their thoughts and many don’t know HOW to argue and still be a lady/gentleman and most of all, how to express their thoughts well, so they are not misunderstood and the second reason I think is that with most of those forums they hate newbies. When someone new shows up full of opinions and posts here and there it only takes one strong opinion and one opposition to get them kicked out, or be called all bunch of names, because people are clicky and they love their clicks – again, insecurity and ignorance.

If you’re raised in a family of educated intelligent people you know how to argue, how to get your point across and you know when to stop. Don’t you agree? (Vlastimil, you’re going to say no just to spite me, right? Hahahaha. Just joking ;))

  • Vlastimil March 30, 2011, 6:35 am

    Marika,
    Yes 😉

  • Vlastimil March 30, 2011, 7:33 am

    Marika,
    Yes

  • Marika March 30, 2011, 10:49 am

Ah, I was joking of course. U seemed to have that special sense of humor 😉

  • Vlastimil March 30, 2011, 1:41 pm

    Just joking 😉

  • Moncler July 13, 2011, 8:01 am

    Those guys are absolutely insane….
