Now it’s official – I have been living in this country for way too long. Why? The other day my Czech friend sent me a short e-mail reply which contained the Czech words “my take”. In Czech it means “us too” but my brain read it in English rather than in Czech and it made everything look very confusing: “My take? What does she mean? Like ‘Yeah, that’s my take on the situation too’???”
Fortunately, my brain rebooted and clicked into the right gear…I got scared there for a bit!
CZ: Nedavno mi kamaradka poslala jakousi kratouckou odpoved pres e-mail, ve kterem bylo napsano: “My take”.
If you liked this post buy me a coffee! (Suggested:$3 a latte $8 for a pound) Thanks!
ziju v USA 23 let a mam ten samy problem, takze nejsi sama a tvuj post mam moc rada…:)))
Musim praktikovat moje cesky!!!” 🙂 Pls let me know if there are czechs in California that would also like to brush up their spanish?…:P
My take on this is simple. Take it easy.
It’s like when I read a Czech text showing “huby”…..I immedaitely think there should be double “b” 😉
Dobre! Now we can say you are officially an American (whatever that is. Canadians and Ecuadorians are Americans too). I used to dream in Spanish. I never did pick up thinking in Czech except Jsem Marek Budka. Je tu Pravda? To je Pravda! I am Mark Budka. Is it true? It is true! And THAT is probably wrong.
Have a great Monday! It is an icy mess in Nebraska!
I am glad I am not alone in this!
Dreaming, that’s another story! I got to make a poll on this – thanks for the idea! I personally don’t even know if I dream in Czech or in English….is that weird?
PS: Thalia, there are bunch of Czechs in CA! If you subscribe to Czechmate diary by email (maybe you have already done it), you receive a list of Czech contacts in your area :))
PS: Vlastimil, I don’t read much Czech literature with the words ‘huby’ (= clapper mouth, trap, sharp tongue) in it – what kind of material are you reading? ;))
Mark Douglas Budka, ja jsem bidlela v Nebrace – I used to live in Lincoln, NE. True of what you say about American! where in NE r u located? I miss the famous Czech Festivals in June. Do u know of them?
Thalia Veintimilla. I live in Lincoln. I am originally from Omaha. I know of Czech Festivals in Wilbur and Clarkson. However, being that my paternal family were Hussites, we tended not to go. There is a Catholic side to the family in Omaha, but they don’t talk with us for some reason. The Czech Protestant community in Southeast Nebraska has pretty much melded into and been lost to general US White culture. I’m rare, as I a third-generation Czech-American where most of my peers are 4th or 5th. My Father is still a part of ZCBJ and SOKOL. He tried to set up both with other Lincoln Czechs some time ago.
James R. Budka. Czech relatives in Brno, CR like to call him Vaclav. Ahoj! Marka
Mark, I had no idea something like that (Hussites vs. Catholics) is still going on! That is fascinating. Can you tell us a bit more about that (if you feel comfortable?)?
European conflicts should stay in Europe 😀 .
