Obama backs down from the anti-missile shield development /Obama ustoupil od vystavby protiraketoveho stitu

Der Spiegel Obama imageUS President Barack Obama decided to withdrew from plans to build a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe. He is hoping that this move will encourage Russia to be tougher with sanctions against Iran. Russia has also promised that it will not build its missiles in the planned Kalingrad area. “I hope you understand the logic…if there are no radars and missiles in Czech or Poland, we don’t have to look for some kind of a payback,” said the Russian ambassador Rogozin. Russia was always against the missile defense system as it were to – according to Russia – ‘disturb a strategic balance and threaten Russia’s security’ (strange…).

According to the Russian media Obama’s decisionΒ  is a sign that “Washington understands the importance of good relations with Russia”.

CZ: USA pred par dny odstoupilo od budovani protiraketoveho stitu v Cechach a Polsku. Za ‘odmenu’ pry Rusko nerozmisti sve rakety Iskander v Kalingradske oblasti a budou take prisnejsi co se tyce sankcich proti Iranu. “Doufam, ze chapete logiku veci…pokud nejsou zadne americke radary ci rakety v Cesku a Polsku, nemusime hledat nejakou odvetnou reakci,” uvedl rusky velvyslanec Rogozin.

Hm, interesting. Of course, not suprising at all. Anybody remembers 1938?

  • Marika September 20, 2009, 10:03 am

Yes, Russsia won, U.S. lost, and Czechs are screwed.

  • Nikola September 20, 2009, 10:19 am

I heard that Obama called the Czech Prime MInister and the Polish guy (I don’t know if it was the president)seven minutes after midnight to inform them of his decision. He woke the Czech PM up, and the polish guy didn’t even pick up the phone. Great timing.

  • Tanja September 20, 2009, 10:42 am

It just makes me mad. The ant-missile shield was going to be there to PROTECT the US as well as EUROPE against the Middle East. So why is it all of a sudden about RUSSIA?? As I said before, ‘potrefena husa se vzdycky ozve’, or in other words, Russia is up to no good. And what does Obama do? He gives in! What good is it going to do in the future? Russia reminds me of a spoiled child where Obama is the never-disciplining parent :((
What do you ladies (and gents) think?

  • Jana B September 20, 2009, 12:21 pm

Now c’mon people! It makes total sense to me. I am no political expert but I think that logically if your neighbor gets a gun first you are going to be thinking “How strange, why?” After a time you’ll keep thinking about it: “Hmmm, maybe in today’s world we really need to be prepared for everything. Maybe we should get one too.” Pretty soon you are going to be using it.
If you don’t have it maybe even the neighbor will rethink it get get rid of it.
Russia is always in a contest with the US. same thing for China, Korea, ….

Ordinary Czech people did not want the shields. On the other hand they wanted the “no VISA needed” they got for exchange. And the Czech politicians just got on that since elections were getting closer.

To Tana: I think that Obama is just the kind parent. He is not using the “Sugar and whip”.
My mom also think I am practicing “the american way of parenting”. No, just kind, mom!
Kolikrat po dobrem jdou veci snaze.

  • Jan Chlumsky September 20, 2009, 12:52 pm

dear Jana. ano, nekdy jdou po dobrem veci snaze. Jenom ne sprolhanym komunistickym Ruskem, kteremu vladne byvaly dustojnik KGB. To jsi slepa a hlucha? Rus vyviji stale nove a nove zbrane a nechce, aby mu svet videl do rukou. Obama je podle mne muslimsky idiot, ktery zadluzi a odzboji Ameriku a proda ji musulmanum.

  • Keith September 20, 2009, 4:23 pm

Jana B- First, we are not talking about a gun here. We are talking about something that would PROTECT US AND EUROPE FROM OTHER PEOPLE’S GUNS!! That’s a huge difference -how can you not see that?
Second, even if it were ‘a gun’, it does not logically follow that ‘pretty soon you are going to be using it’.
Most Police officers never even fire their weapon. Most gun owners never use their weapon on a person. Most black belt martial arts experts have never even been in a fight!
And to top it all off -Obama makes this announcement on the 70th year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Poland. Good Lord, and people thought Bush was dumb…

  • Jana B September 20, 2009, 4:45 pm

Whatever Keith. If you don’t see it as comparison… Of course it’s in a big picture! Weapons are weapons. Things change and ways to do politics do too.

On the other hand I am glad that Obama is not “loved by everyone”, that would be weird. This way it gets people thinking and talking and that’s always good.
    The End.

  • Tanja September 20, 2009, 4:47 pm

PS: To Jana B – you cannot be kind to a SPOILED child!!!

  • Jana B September 20, 2009, 4:56 pm

Tano: You can’t be forceful either. It will always come back to you even worse.

To Jan Chlumsky: “Obama je podle mne muslimsky idiot”????
Tak tady neco nehraje, ocividne o Obamovi nic nevite!

  • Vlastimil September 20, 2009, 6:33 pm

How entertaining!!! Russia is definitely not a spoiled child. They have blood of millions of people on their hands. Millions of their own people. Russia has not changed. The same people are at the power now as they were when the communism was the promised future.
Russian communists could survive quite a long time thanks to American crooked “capitalists” like Hammer, Ford and others.
Russian people are the biggest victims of the communism and now of the fascist government led by Putin (Medvedev has been “elected” simply to make it possible for people to elect Putin (the former KGB criminal))… The Russian constitution makes it possible.. Obama is the worst thing, that happened to USA. Bush’s administration had offered a cooperation to the Russian Bear, but the offer had been rejected by Russian hardliners, many of whom own properties and apartments in Miami and elsewhere in USA.

I know that many people in Czech Republic don’t like USA , so be it. We all are entitled to our own opinion. If something bad happens (I wish it did not) , I will be the first to lobby againts any help to Europe….

  • Vlastimil September 20, 2009, 6:47 pm

BTW, it is very possible, that within 2 years, there will happen something that will make USA very “brown” or very “red”…..but definitely it will be something different that we know and love know ;; πŸ™

  • Vlastimil September 20, 2009, 6:50 pm

…and that’s the reason why Obama does not need the Anti-missile shield….

  • lenka September 20, 2009, 9:17 pm

You cannot bribe a bully and that is exactly what this administration is doing. It never worked and it will never work. The only thing we are accomplishing is showing the rest of the world how weak United States has become. What a shame… this republic was not founded on socializem, our founding fathers did not intend (actually they warned us) for government to become so powerful and people to get so dependent on it. People of this country wanted a change, they are definitely getting a change. Just not the one they hoped for.

  • lenka September 20, 2009, 9:32 pm

Jana B. – Russia will always be the same. they have the “guns”, they have the power, they will use it and abuse it the way they see fit. They have proven it time after time on their own people, their neighbors and our own home land. YOur comments about guns and gun abuse only shows you have no understanding of gun owners responsibilities and pride. What you are describing are thoughts of criminals.

  • Tanja September 20, 2009, 10:24 pm

    I agree with Lenka πŸ˜‰

  • keith September 20, 2009, 10:33 pm

    Lenka-Very, very well said.
Vlastimil- You are very right -Obama is the worst thing that could happen to America. Hopefully the people will see soon enough his true colors. I think there is already hope in the outcry against his Healthcare agenda.
Jana-Weapons are not weapons. A MISSILE DEFENSE SHIELD is NOT A MISSILE!!! It a DEFENSE and not an offensive weapon. It PROTECTS people and does not KILL them. Do you not see the difference?

  • keith September 20, 2009, 10:36 pm

Vlastimil- Actually, to qualify my statement, Obama is not the WORST thing that could happen to America -there are much worse things. He was just the worst thing between himself and Mccain.

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 2:32 am

keith, you are right. Obama is not the worst thing ever happened to USA, but it feels much so πŸ™‚ Last elections were a complete disaster, Obama really had no competition. By voting for McCain, I really did not for McCain, I voted against Obama. I understand, that McCain had no chance. I wonder where all those presidential candidates came from πŸ™‚ USA will become a kingdom anyway, so at least we will skip the elections of fools πŸ™‚
Obama is a very charismatic person with ability to convince people.. I know one such a person from history and I remember his changes ended in a complete disaster πŸ™‚

  • Erin September 21, 2009, 12:29 pm

Just FYI–the president’s first name is “Barack,” not “Barac.” πŸ™‚

  • Marika September 21, 2009, 11:01 pm

Who cares, his middle name is Hussein. That says it all. History is repeating itself.

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 11:19 pm

I just found this in Wikipedia:
“African-American history starts in the 17th century with indentured servitude in the American colonies and progresses onto the election of an African American as the 44th and current President of the United States – Barack Obama.”

I really don’t get it. What has B. Obama common with the history of “indentured servitude”???

Lies are piling up ….. No wonder he cancelled the anti-missile shield. It looks like he really wants changes that citizens of this country voted for,,,,

  • Jana B September 21, 2009, 11:34 pm

I feel so sorry for you guys. You are so hateful and one sided. Obama was clear in his campaign about the missile shields. I’ll bet most of you here are living in Red states and are influenced by people around you too much.
    Open up your minds!
    Good bye, be well.

  • lenka September 21, 2009, 11:39 pm

Don’t you know that the definision of words changes? Funny how a meaning of a word can change with time. Look up the def. of racism fifty years ago and now. πŸ™‚ We just got back from Disneyworld. The hall of presidents was rededicated to Obama. Traditionally this featured and showcased all the presidents. We skipped this attraction this year for one specific reason … come on people, he has been in the office for less then a year and you are already dedicating an attraction to him?

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 11:43 pm

I did not know Obama is in Disneyworld….Can children ride on him ? πŸ˜‰

  • keith September 21, 2009, 11:44 pm

    Marika-That’s pretty funny.
Vlastimil- Don’t you know? Obama’s Mom made him take out the trash for his allowance when he was 12. That qualifies him for indentured servitude doesn’t it?
Jana- Hateful how? One sided? How? Explain please. Obama was NOT clear about the missile shield ESPECIALLY when he was in Prague a few months ago!!! See it for what it is -he has backed down to the Russians! And I live in California which is a BLUE state my dear.

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 11:45 pm

Jana: I don’t like any politicians , be it red or blue…They are the most crooked part of society. We should re-introduce kingdom and I would volunteer to become a King ….

  • lenka September 21, 2009, 11:45 pm

Sorry Jana B. I am open minded and I don’t get influenced easily. So typical to trow in the red state/blue state. Who cares what state you live in. I believe in individualism, not some kind of a group. Just because some people do not agree with his ideas does not mean they are one sided and hateful. Really? Next thing you will be saying is that people here are racist.

  • lenka September 21, 2009, 11:47 pm

Vlastimil πŸ™‚ come on, he is not a Dumbo or a flying carpet. Though my husband would probably take this kids on that one ride. πŸ™‚

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 11:50 pm

I wanted to write something but it would be too far away from our “missile crises” debate πŸ™‚

  • keith September 21, 2009, 11:52 pm

Lenka- The meaning of words change over time indeed. ‘Tolerance’ is my favorite. It used to mean tolerating someone else’s view that you may vehemently disagree with but still respecting them as a human being. Now it means if you do not COMPLETELY ACCEPT someone else’s viewpoint, lifestyle etc. as EQUALLY VALID as your own, you are racist, homophobe, Islamophobe etc. What a joke. A very, very scary joke.

  • lenka September 21, 2009, 11:53 pm

I agree with Vlastimil. the government has become toooooo powerful. There is a reason for 2nd amendment. They have tried to take it away for years now, because they know if they succeed, there is NO stopping them then.

  • Vlastimil September 21, 2009, 11:58 pm

It is funny, Bush decided to build the anti-missile shield, Obama decided to cancel it…. Do anybody asked Czech people what they want? Does the government ask us what we want? They keep forgetting that they are people’s servants….

  • Vlastimil September 22, 2009, 12:00 am

“Do anybody asked” ought to be “Did anybody ask?” (I was using pidgin English πŸ™‚ )

  • lenka September 22, 2009, 12:07 am

did anybody watch Klaus on CSpan tonight. The question of missile shields was brought up.

  • Vlastimil September 22, 2009, 12:14 am

I had better things to do than watching Santa Clause….

  • Tanja September 22, 2009, 11:13 pm

    No, what did he say??
