The more I speak Czech to my daughter the more I am finding myself saying bad words. I mean, they are not bad in Czech language but they sound bad to the English ear. Here are some examples:
- bic (whip) sounds like bitch
- du-du (binkie) sounds like du-du (poop)
- pi-pi (bird sound) sounds like pee-pee (urine)
- fakt (really?) sounds like fu***d
- kakat (to poop) ; slightly offensive word for poop
- pusa (mouth) sounds like pu**y
- mimi (baby) sounds like my friends name (her name is Mimi)
Got anything else to add to the list?
If you liked this post buy me a coffee! (Suggested:$3 a latte $8 for a pound) Thanks!
se seznamem souhlasim aazbudu v lepsi kondici nez usinaci popremyslim o dalsich slovech.
Jinak nasefakt? – vyhrava nacely care:D
Ja to rikam jeste jinak a to triska vsema stejne dobre. 🙂
Jannney: pockej, co myslis tim “vyhrava nacely care”?
We both gor a good laugh about it but people were turning around … I am not sure what they were thinking …
I am soooo embarrassed to say “mouth” in czech that I use the archaic sounding “usta”. Which makes me sound like a crazy poet or something. Next thing I should teach my son to say “Luna” isntead of “mesic”. A je to…
I know that is the worst word…and “pusinka” is even worse!!!
But I did not get ‘mesic’ – what’s wrong with that word???
oh, “mesic” is perfectly innocent. But “luna” sounds silly enough in Czech to go with “usta”….so my kid is going to walk around sounding like Karel Hynek Macha.
asi jsi to, Tanjo, cetla anglicky “najsly ker” 🙂
Ahoj Nikolo, no vidis to, to mi vubec ani neprislo! Zeptala jsem se na to manzela (americana) a on rikal, ze mu to taky neprislo a to asi proto, protoze uz znal slovo ‘babuska’ a babicka zni skoro stejne..
What’s a “binkie”?
binkie is a pacifier
A ten seznam me docela rozesmal. Bohuzel moc cesky posledni dobou nemluvim (manzelovy deti zacaly bydlet s nami a cesky neumi vubec, tak me prestalo bavit jecet na vsechny deti dvojjazycne)…. takze nikoho moc do rozpaku neuvadim (krome toho kdyz jsem u telefonu se sestrou)
Ale deti se muzou potrhat smichy kdyz se z kuchyne ozve “Who went to sneak into the cabinet to get cereal and did not close the box or the cabinet? MORCEC HADRY PARDYJE KOPYTO!!!!)
Ahoj Magdo!! Taky jsem rada, ze jsi nas nasla! Tvoje posledni veta me fakt rozesmala :))))) Pockej, ale nemelo to byt ‘mordec’???
