Trebon offers more than enormous carps / Trebon nabizi vic nez obrovske kapry

Although the town of Trebon has only about 8,000 inhabitants it  has been quietly sitting on the map of Europe since the 12th century. Once the famous royal family of Rosenbergs bought the town in 1366 it started to experience its “Golden Age”, mostly thanks to its – now very famous – fish pond farming. Because of the town being geographically located in between vast marshes as well as Trebon’s own fortifications and deep moats, it bravely managed to fight off the Hussite army many, many times. The fish pond building started around the 16th century with its most famous personality being Jakub Krcin from Jelcany. Jakub built 2 major masterpieces: a pond called “Svet” (the World) for which he was criticized quite a bit at first because, from the structural point of view, it disturbed Trebon’s abilitity to defend itself; that’s why Jakub first named the pond the “Ingratitude” (later he probably realized he was overly dramatic and changed it to “Svet”). His second masterpice was the Rosenberg pond – the biggest pond in the Czech Republic. This man-made lake is genius not only for its size but also its structure: thanks to the inbuilt ditch called the New River the nearby river Luznice could drain an access of water in case of  floods.

Today Trebon is not only known for its beautiful countryside, the enourmous-sized carps, but also for its spa services. Here are some interesting things about Trebon that I bet you didn’t know about:

  1. Trebon is a birth town to Karel Poborsky, a famous Czech soccer player
  2. A mother of a famous Brasilian president Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliviera came from Trebon
  3. It is a home to the Regent beer brewery founded in 1379, which makes it one of the oldest breweries in the world!!

Ti posilili Trebon novymi zdenymi hradbami a prikopem, ktere spolu s okolnim bazinatym terenem vytvorilo z mesta nedobytnou pevnost. Bylo tomu take behem husitskych valek, kdy Trebon odolala Husistskym utokum, a to nejen jednou.

  1. rodne mesto Karla Poborskeho, znameho fotbalisty
  2. rodne mesto matky znameho brazilskeho prezidenta Juscelino Kubitschek de Oliviera

Oh, how I miss this town!!!
I went to high school in Trebon, and lived in a dorm, which was located in the castle, right next to the brewery and Svet. I have such fond memories on those years. My best friend and I would get a summer job in one of the many restaurants and stay at the dorm for part of the summer. We had so much fun back then.
Our moms joke with us that we will never be able to cut the umbilical cord with Trebon!!!
Every time I go back to the Czech Republic I always visit Trebon – I have to say it’s becoming more beautiful every time I see it. If I ever moved back home, this would be where I’d live. I just love that place!
