Who will be the next Czech president? The elections start February 8th of next year (which is in a couple of months):
- The majority of people (67%) would still vote for Vaclav Klaus (the current president of CR), even though most of these “fans” still complain about his reoccurring arrogance
- potential candidate is also Jan Svejnar, a Czech-American who escaped in the USA when he was 17 years old.
Svejnar’s curriculum vitae sounds pretty impressive. According to www.abcprague.com Jan graduated from the Cornell University where receiving degree in Industrial and Labor Relationships and later obtained a PhD. in Economics from Princeton University. He now teaches Economics and Public Policy at the University of Michigan. As the article further states, this magnificent life makes him actually overqualified from the Czech point of view. Why? Although Svejnar does have a Czech citizenship, he just hasn’t been spending much time actually living in the Czech Republic. So how is he to know what the real political issues of the country are? (I can see the point…)
CZ: Kdo bude pristim ceskym presidentem? Svejnaruv zivotopis je opravdu zajimavy: graduoval z Cornell University v oboru Industrial and Labor Relationships a pozdeji obdrzel PhD. v oboru Ekonomie a to z Princeton University.

I would be glad if Kluas got kicked off his presidential office, as the only political activity he shows is denying everything, like the Blob library or the Global warming. But Svejnar, I am afraid, doesn’t have much chance… like this time, he was asked what does the Presidential Flag of the CR says… he replied ‘I have to inform myself’ :/ BTW, it says: “The Truth Wins”
So I guess Svejnar has got some studying to do….How is his Czech? Does he have an accent? I would think so since he has been out of the country since he was a teenager…
but denying global warming is not necessarily a bad thing…or at least the current fad that mankind is responsible for it. there are thousands of qualified scientists who laugh at the proposition as put forth by Al Gore.
Klaus or Svejnar doesn’t really matter. But Svejnar as a super economist should help to correct the economy in the country or in the countries like Romania, Bulgaria (Svejnar his speciality).
What about a czech president like Madeleine Albright or the actually US. president?
Can anybody explain me, how Svejnar could leave the Czechoslovakia (he – 17 and his younger sister)? Their parents were abroad already.
I am not sure how the kids (Jan and his sister) got to the US; maybe on the visitor visa? But then the communist probably wouldn’t allow that. My mom told me that Svejnar’s father used to be with the STB (communist secret police) – his signature to the STB was publicly released in the newspaper. So that might have been a BIG help, right?
