Should Czech beer give thanks to the Germans ?! / Melo by Ceske pivo dekovat Nemcum?!

Czech beer has had a long history. A first brewery  is known to have existed in as early as 1118. It’s hard to believe but Wikipedia claims that the beer wasn’t really nothing special until 1842, when Josef Groll, a German brewer, was employed by a brewery in Pilsen. He invented the so-called cold fermentation larger method along with the miraculous golden Pilsner beer, which was the first light coloured beer ever brewed! From then on the Czechs – ironically, thanks to a German dude – were the kings of beer. The British newspaper The Times has recently published a list of the 10 best Czech beers/breweries and here is the verdict:

1. Pivovarsky Dvur, Chyne
2. Beronsky Medved, Beroun
3. Moritz, Olomouc
4. Vendelin, Liberec
5. Pernstejn, Pardubice
6. Pivovar nova Paka
7. Nedlesice
8. Pivovarsky Dvur Lipan
9. Pilsner Urquell, Plzen
10. Dalesice

Most of them, I have never heard of (whatever happened to Staropramen or Velvet??).

And what is the beer of the Year in 2008? According to the Research institute of Brewery the winner is Kozel Medium, a lager from Velke Popovice Brewery.

CZ: Ceke pivo ma dlouholetou historii; existence jakehosi pivovaru je dokumentovana jiz v roce 1118. Tezko se da ale verit tomu, ze podle Wikipedie nebylo nase pivo nic moc az do roku 1842, kdy se Plsensky pivovar rozhodl zamestnat nemeckeho pivovarnika, Josefa Grolla. Josef tak v Plzni vynalezl nejen novou metodu vareni piva (tzv. “cold fermentation larger method”), ale take kouzelny napoj – zlatici se Plzenske pivo. Toto pivo se stalo prvnim svetlym pivem na svete! Od te doby jsou Cesi kralove piva – a to ironicky diky Nemcum.

Vyse je uvedeny list nejlepsich piv/pivovaru, a to podle znameho britskeho magazinu, The Times. Ja vetsinu jmen vubec nerozeznavam (co se stalo Staropramenu? A Velvetu??), ale to nic neznamena, protoze az tak velky pivar nejsem 🙂

Vite jake pivo se stalo PIVEM ROKU 2008? Kozel z Velkopopovickeho pivovaru!
