Czechs are getting chunky…/ Cesi se vytucnuji…

The number of obese Czechs is 3 to 4-times higher than it was around the 1850’s. This steady increase in weight stalled during the 1980’s and in the beginning of 1990’s when the price of food had increased considerably. After this stall, Czechs are currently happily gaining weight again because of:

1. cheap food, where the prices are increasing in a slower rate than the average wages
2. less physical activity (especially in the countryside where only the minority is currently involved in any kind of hard physical labor)
3. increase in number of automobiles

Weight gain is not only a problem of the middle-aged and the older part of population but also of children (6-12 years old). The appearance of obesity has been increasing steadily from 10% in 1991 to 13% in 2001 to 15% in 2005:

I think it’s the Big Mac’s that they are munching on after school. Back when I was still living in Czech and the whole McDonald thing was just starting , that food was just way too expensive for us so we only had a hamburger during special occasions. But now, the prices are much more consumer-friendly and thus the obese problem….What do you think?

CZ: Pocet tlustych Cechu se od poloviny minuleho stoleti zvysil 3x az 4x. Pribyrani na vaze se pribrzdilo v 80. a zacatkem 90. let, kdy se ceny potravin vyznacne zdrazily. Pote Cesi zase zacli vesele tloustnout a to pry diky

1. nizke cene potravin, ktere dnes vstoupaji pomaleji, nez prumerne mzdy.
2. ubytek pohybu (zejmena na venkove, kde pouze mensina vykonava fyzickou praci v zemedelstvi)
3. vzrust poctu automobilu

S nadvahou pry bojuji zejmena lide ve strednim a vyssim veku, ale take deti (!!):

Ja osobne si myslim, ze jsou to ty Big Mac’s, na kterych si dnes ceske deti pochutnavaji po skole. Kdyz jsem jeste zila v Cechach a cela tato McDonaldovska afera pouze zacinala, tak vetsina lidi na ty hamburgry proste penize nemelo; bylo to moc drahe. Tak jsme se tam schazeli trebas na narozeniny….ale dneska? Je to pro Cechy cenove dostupne pochutnani a v tom je zakopany pes….
