Are you Watching Czech fairy tales this Christmas season? / “Nastenku chci za zenu!!!”

Mrazik google imageIt is a Czech tradition to watch specific fairy tales on TV during Christmas and the New Year holidays. When I was a little girl, our country was rulled by communists so we were ‘prescribed’ to watch the Russian fairytale  “Mrazik” (see the YouTube video bellow). It was pretty much on all the time and all of the kids knew the movie monologues by heart. Do you keep this tradition even though you live abroad now?

CZ: Tak co, divate se o Vanocnich prazdninach na ceske pohadky nebo jste tuto tradici v zahranici uz vzdali? Doufam, ze ne! Volte a pak si pripomente pohadku Mrazika v nasledujicim YouTube videu:

What Czech movies did you (or are you going to) watch during the holidays?

In response to your comments on being “prescribed” to watch Mzarik during communism, I disagree. The movie was just so well done that we wanted to watch it – people were not “prescribed” to watch it any more than they are “prescribed” to watch it now. Your comments imply that the general population, children included, were somehow compelled to watch it. I want to thank you for providing the download on your web site as I haven’t watched it for years.

Yes, we are. Our VCR, which can play czech movies does not work that well anymore. I am trying to find DVD player, which could play czech DVDs. Is it possible to find such a device in U.S.?

Marika, YES it is totally possible! I even wrote about this topic:

    – there is a bunch of DVD players that play European movies as well; just ask in the store (like Best Buy or something) and they will be able to help you.

    Hi Lwestaway,

I am not saying that it was a bad movie. I am just saying that we had a prescribed selection of movies to watch. Mrazik was one of them.

Yes, I have my own DVD copy of Mrazik and I love to watch it around Christmas time. It is a fun movie, well done. I agree with LWestaway. Many people in Czech were sad when few years ago the Czech TV said there won’t be any more Mrazik during Christmas. I believe it is back now… 🙂

I don’t think it was prescribed to watch certain movies.
Simply, the selection of available movies was very limited.
I have 250-300 TV channels here and still, it feels like the selection is very limited. I am going to buy a “media extender”, which will allow to stream movies to my flat 1080p TV… btw, Netflix should have quite a good selection of European movies….

In either the U.S. or the English-speaking world, this movie was given the name of “Jack Frost”.

And it was featured on the comedy show, “Mystery Science Theater 3000”:

    It’s on youtube:

What has “Mrazik” to do with Czech fairy tails? It’s great one no doubt about it but it’s not Czech at all. And about the “how to play ‘czech’dvds” topic – there is no such thing as czech DVD, DVDs sold in CR are region 2 whereas DVDs for US market are region 1. So what Czech/European movie lover has to do is – get him self a region free DVD player or buy DVD region 1 or 0 (open) DVDs.

    More details at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code
