Rihanna google imageThe new Queen of Pop, Rihanna, is going to be performing in Prague this Thursday, and it is supposed to be quite the show. This is not her first time visiting Prague. To put it straight, Prague is pretty much Rihanna’s second home. Do you want a proof?

National Theatre is wearing a black flag…/www.novinky.cz imageToday passed away yet another very famous Czech actor, Radovan Lukavsky. At the age of 88 Radovan died of serious heart complications. He was born in 1919 in Prague. His mother has led him to Christianity since Radovan’s early childhood, which led him to desire to become a pastor. His theology studies, however, were abruptly stopped when the Nazi occupation began. Radovan’s theological mind then had to be satisfied by the permitted studies of philosophy and acting instead. As a fresh graduate Radovan’s first acting job was at the Vinohrady Theatre. [click to continue…]

awards google imageThe winner of the Czech music awards the “Album of the Year for 2007″ in women’s category as well as the all-time winner became Aneta Langerova with her new album Dotyk. Born in 1986 (youngster!) Aneta showed her multi-talented personality from early childhood. Not only was she good at tennis, acting, and instrument playing (piano and guitar) she was also a great singer. Aneta got discovered via the TV show “Czech is looking for a superstar” where she sang the Alanis Morissette song “Thank You” and won 79% of votes.

1. The top male singer of 2007 became Daniel Landa (don’t care much about him at all) who:

  • sold the most records
  • was played most frequently on the radio that year
  • sold most tracks via the Internet

Ivan Mladek / iDNES.cz photoAs I wrote recently in one of my posts the old Czech folk song “Jozin z Bazin” has become a huge hit in Poland. Now the new development in this Jozin-z-Bazin mania is that the Polish made a YouTube parody of that song. As one of my commenters Maciej explains, “The parody makes fun of Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and current politics in general to the tune of Jozin z Bazin. And the parody is becoming a hit as well but it will unlikely beat Jozin z Bazin”. Well, we will see about that because that video is FUNNY! [click to continue…]

TV yahoo imageYou may have glanced at the TV show Wifeswap (where families exchange their wifes/moms for a certain period of time) while surfing your TV channels or it can be one of our favorite shows that you faithfully watch every week. If that is the case then you are not alone. Not only it is a hit in the US but the Czech version (Vymena manzelek) produced by the NOVA channel has become pretty much the number one reality TV show (even more popular than Big Broher!) in the Czech Republic. According to the ATO-Mediasearch about 58% of people are hooked on the Vymena manzelek where the final episode was watched by 1/3 of the Czech population (2.82 million Czechs). In fact, the show is so popular that the members of the Czech Parliament want to take it off the air. [click to continue…]

monster yahoo image I LOVE THIS! Do you remember Ivan Mladek’s song called “Jozin z Bazin” (the Swampland Jozin) (see the words to the song by clicking here) ? Well, if you don’t, it is a 30-year old, folk song that became a huge hit at the time. The song is about this monster Jozin who lives in the swamps somewhere in Moravia and eats only people from Prague – the city snobs. Although he doesn’t eat the locals they are tired of him. That is why the town mayor makes an offer to give away his daughter and a half or the “JZD” (the communist word for the town farm) to anyone who destroys this monster. The Czechs still play it on the radio from time-to-time. Every time I hear this song it brings me back to my childhood: I am 7 years old, hanging out with my friends at my parent’s cottage during the summer and lazily munching on Nanuk (an awesome communist ice cream bar). Anyway – it’s crazy – but this song ( and the video) has just now become a HUGE hit in Poland! It’s been the number one song on most of the Polish Top Song list (in Polish it is Jozek z bagien). The teenagers have the disco version uploaded in their MP3′s and are dancing away, trying to copy the dancing style of Ivo Pesak. [click to continue…]
