marriage

When were were back in the Czech Republic the last time my cousin asked my husband: “Why did you guys get married if you weren’t pregnant?” We gave him kind of a blank stare back, not knowing how to respond. For love? Isn’t that usually the reason why do people get married? But according to  the Ceske Noviny newspaper 59% of Czechs  did get married because of their offspring. What is interesting is that 70% of those who participated in the poll think of an ideal family as having 2 children – no more, no less. This has been a wide spread thought for quite some time, say  the statistical analysts. [click to continue…]

plate licking google imageWe all know that the Czechs have some bad habits; we don’t like to say the words ‘I love you’, we have some bad table manners such as licking of the plate and many of us like to smoke and drink…and not exercise on top of everything else. To add to our humility quest, the Czech Daily blog publicized yet another one of those ‘bad’ habits (Peter actually calls it the worst Czech habit of all!), although this one may not seem bad to everyone….read the whole article right here.

What do you guys think?

argument google imageEmily Prucha is a writer for the Prague Daily Monitor but she is also married to a Czech man. In her recent article Emily describes communication skills (or the lack of) of her Czech husband Radek. Listen to this:

‘From the beginning of our relationship, I knew that Radek and I had strikingly different temperaments. Still, it took us several years to realize that many of our arguments resulting from miscommunications had as much to do with our cultural upbringings as our individual personal traits. In many cases, some of my husband’s most admirable attributes are the ones that strike the greatest discord when we disagree. It’s highly likely, that the same goes for me. Early on in our dating days Radek and I went to a sporting goods store so I could look for new running tights. He helped me pick out a few pairs, and I went into the dressing room to try them on. When I modeled them for his approval, I was shocked and hurt when he honestly replied, “They are no good. You have short legs and the pants make your legs look even shorter.” Tearful, I fled the dressing room and the shopping trip was aborted. A few minutes later my Czech girlfriend who witnessed the scene tried to calm me down by saying Radek wasn’t trying to be insensitive, and that she understood why I was upset, but that she also understood Radek’s perspective. While there have been many times since that moment, that I have truly appreciated Radek’s directness, this was one of the times that I hated the Czech propensity for honesty.

ceske noviny image Vera Hordova is 88 years-of-age and her husband Vaclav is 92. This is not just some kind of a regular Czech couple though; besides their impressive age, the couple has been married for 70 years!!!! They rightfully celebrated their marriage victory at the Cesky Krumlov town hall last week. What is their story? Hordovi got married in a stressful year of 1939 – at the beginning of World War II. They both claim that it was a love at a first sight; they got married 2 years later, however, since Vera was not 18 years old yet, she had to get a written approval from her parents. “The wedding itself was very simple; we went to the church at 7 am, got married and  went to work after the ceremony  since we had owned a little grocery store back then. Our parents roasted us a goose the following weekend as a celebration of our marriage….Since the times were hard back then there were no wedding gifts either – everyone had to save up their money as hard as they could”, says Vera.
