cute baby google imageCan you guess, what is currently the most popular Czech name? Girls are most often named by Tereza and the most popular boy name is Jakub. ‘Tereza’ has been winning the name charts for 11 years now (!!), while ‘Jakub’ won the ‘Best of’ prize for the second time this year.  According to the Czech statisticians themselves the old fashioned Czech names such as Anezka, Amalie or Kveta are going through a great comeback, while nontraditional  names such as Sofie, Vanesa or Liliana are also popular. The boy names on the other hand have forerunners such as Oliver, Kristian, Vendelin or Florian. Here is the full list: [click to continue…]

ceske noviny image Vera Hordova is 88 years-of-age and her husband Vaclav is 92. This is not just some kind of a regular Czech couple though; besides their impressive age, the couple has been married for 70 years!!!! They rightfully celebrated their marriage victory at the Cesky Krumlov town hall last week. What is their story? Hordovi got married in a stressful year of 1939 – at the beginning of World War II. They both claim that it was a love at a first sight; they got married 2 years later, however, since Vera was not 18 years old yet, she had to get a written approval from her parents. “The wedding itself was very simple; we went to the church at 7 am, got married and  went to work after the ceremony  since we had owned a little grocery store back then. Our parents roasted us a goose the following weekend as a celebration of our marriage….Since the times were hard back then there were no wedding gifts either – everyone had to save up their money as hard as they could”, says Vera. Ever since the year of 2006 the Czech Repulic has been announcing the winner of the bravest Czech of the Year. What a great idea! This year’s winner became Filip Korostenksi, a “regular” Joe, who happened to save a life of a 9-month pregnant women. Apparently, while driving she became unconscious, her car drove onto the sidewalk and was uncontrollably rolling forward. As soon as Filip spotted what was happening, he jumped into the car through the open window and tried to put the emergency brake on. The car ended up hitting a wall and finally stopped. Filip then managed to call the ambulance to take the women to the hospital (the article does not say whether the women turned out to be all right but let’s assume so). Filip received a statue of a guardian angel, a symbol of the “Michal Velisek’s Prize“. Michael Velisek, whom the prize was named after,  died 2 years ago saving a life of a stranger – a women who was brutally attacked by some street villains. [click to continue…]
