Czech language

tongue twister google imageIf you have not heard of those Czech tongue twisters, you have not lived your life to the full yet. It is truly an experience! My Czech Republic blog has them even recorded (in a fast and a slow motion) so you can get the real taste of those sounds! My favorite one is “Strč prst skrz krk”, meaning “Stick your finger through your throat”. I bet you burn few hundred calories just by repeating this one couple of times!

To listen to the recordings click here.

19174_279609116043_279605881043_3942574_2859337_nTexas Czechs developed a very nice Czech language series on YouTube. I found so far only the first 4 beginner lessons but I am sure more will be coming in the near future. For those who would like to learn this difficult language these videos are a perfect opportunity. They are simple and entertaining.

img_2822 Every 6 months or so I write a small report on how is my daughter doing with her bilingual skills. She is two and half now which means it is time for me to tell you about her progress:

PS: For part 1 click here, part 2 click here and part 3 click here

I don’t know how else to start than by saying that it’s been going really great. Although I do not use the strange O.P.O.L. (One Parent One Language) method with her, my daughter has no problem understanding and also speaking Czech. She actually says whole sentences like a real human now! I will give you an example: we are in the grocery store and Hanicka points at some lady and says: “Pani ma velke brisko” (Lady has a big belly) or she points at some poor lady with graying hair and exclaims “To je babika!” (That’s grandma!). From practical reasons you can see that it is VERY advantageous she speaks Czech with me in public otherwise we would be in a big trouble. Instead, the big bellied lady and the other woman with graying hair are just pleasantly smiling at me, probably admiring how culturally diverse my family is.

When we are at a playground with other American kids she has no problem switching to English once she realizes that we are socializing with the English-speaking fellows. If I switch into English, she gets the hint really quickly and goes on speaking English as well. My husband marvels on how well she switches to English when he is around. Once in a while she starts talking to him in Czech but in a couple of seconds she switches back. Now, get this: when I tell Hahna in Czech “Jdi rict tatovi, ze je hotova vecere” (Go tell daddy that dinner is ready), she walks up to her dad and says “Daddy, dinner is ready”. She instantly translates it in her head without me telling her anything! I was pretty excited about that one. [click to continue…]

chocolate chip cookie google imageI don’t know how about you but every time I am offering someone a cookie in the Czech language I find myself in a very confusing and uncomfortable situation. To stay true to my Czech soul I want to say ‘susenka‘ but deep inside I know -  and you know – that ‘cookie‘ is NOT a ‘susenka‘! Susenka is a waffle-like sweet cracker where as cookie si something…..different; something which does not have its equal in the Czech Republic. Simply put, there is no correct translation for the word ‘cookie‘ and that saddens me. So I guess I will just keep feeling guilty about calling it ‘susenka‘ and wait for that wonderful day when someone else will discover a different, better-fitting translation for it. However, the same acute problem is facing the word ‘muffin‘. Excuse me, but what the heck would you call that in Czech? ‘Buchta‘ – for the lack of a better term??

Life is so hard sometimes….
My mom sent my bunch of Fidorkas and Milas for my birthday the other day and when my daughter asked me what it was I could finally, without guilt, say: ‘susenka‘ – true susenka.

google Gray's anatomy imageWhenever Jamie writes me an e-mail, the content is so good that I just have to post it (of course, with Jamie’s consent)! What a fun topic!

CZ: Pokazde, kdyz mi Jamie posle e-mail, stoji to za to. Jeho obsah je vzdycky tak zajimavy, ze  se s vami o nej proste musim podelit (samozrejme ze se souhlasem Jamieho).

Hey, Tanja!

If you want some fun, go to the TV Prima website, look at the “Zahranicni serialy” (Foreign TV shows) and try to figure out why some titles are translated, and why some aren’t. And why some of them are translated the way they are. I did this last night, and here is what I wrote to a friend about it: [click to continue…]

maxipes-fik-v-boudeI have put together a list of YouTube videos of my favorite (and now also my daughter’s favorite) Czech fairy tales – well, most of them are Czech – and I hope it will put a smile on you face when you reminisce about the old times (notice that this is only the first part, two more posts like this are coming soon!). And you know what are other bonus? It will teach your kids Czech and it will also keep them quiet for a few minutes ;0)

PS: For those who do not understand Czech I apologize – all of these are in Czech only. But don’t worry, the next posts will have some silent videos too!

Hanicka 2yrs oldIt is the time again when I do the bi-annual update on my daughter’s bilingual skills. Hahna just recently turned 2 and she is so much fun (well, OK the potty training is not that much fun, I admit…)! If you recall I called the last post  “The bitter-sweet results so far” because at 18 months-of-age  she was speaking mostly English. I am ecstatic to say that has changed. She is totally bilingual now! It started at about 20 months-of-age when she began repeating almost everything I said, including tremendously loooong words like ‘vodopad‘ (waterfall), ‘skluzavka‘ (slide) or ‘ananas‘ (pineapple). She did the same thing in English with her English-speaking daddy and babi (grandma). She  now speaks to me solely in Czech and switches to English with no problem when when she talks to daddy. And when we are all together, she talks also mostly in English, with a few Czech words here and there.

Where it gets a bit tricky and (unfortunately) confusing for Hanicka is when we meet with my American girlfriends and their kids. [click to continue…]

embarrassed google imageThe more I speak Czech to my daughter the more I am finding myself saying bad words. I mean, they are not bad in Czech language but they sound bad to the English ear. Here are some examples:

CZ: Cim vic mluvim s mou 2-letou dcerkou Hanickou cesky, tim casteji se nachazim v situaci, kdy rikam sprosta slova. Ne ze by byla sprosta v cestine, ale bohuzel zni sproste v anglickem jazyce. Tady jsou uvdene nejake priklady:

  1. bic (whip) sounds like bitch
  2. du-du (binkie) sounds like du-du (poop)
  3. pi-pi (bird sound) sounds like pee-pee (urine)
  4. fakt (really?) sounds like fu***d
  5. kakat (to poop) ; slightly offensive word for poop
  6. pusa (mouth) sounds like pu**y
  7. mimi (baby) sounds like my friends name (her name is Mimi)

Got anything else to add to the list?
