Jake Pavelka google imageI have not watched the last Bachelor show but I could not help myself noticing the tabloids on the front pages of every magazine: “Jake Pavelka picked the bad girl!“, ” Jake Pavelka cheats on his fiancee“, “Jake Pavelka will be dancing with the Stars!“. I did some quick research on the origin of his last name and my suspicion was confirmed. The name is definitely of a Czech origin ( I could not find any specific details on what side of his parents is actually Czech though). [click to continue…]

sablikova radio.cz imageWinning 6 medals – it could not get any better for the Czechs! Let’s do a recap:

  • Martina Sablikova (speed skater) won 2 (!!) gold medals, and one bronze medal
  • Lukas Bauer (cross country skier) won 1 bronze medal
  • Sarka Zahrobska (downwill skier) won 1 bronze medal

Sablikova, now the most successful Czech winter Olympic game competitor ever, is not sure what to do with her medals. Should she put them in a safe or should she hang them  on her wall so that she can be reminded of her victories every morning when she wakes up? One thing she is sure of though, that tomorrow she is going to start training again….to win more medals. [click to continue…]

lake baikal/ tripadvisor.com imageToday left Prague an important travel expedition called the Bargans Bajkal 2010. It consists of 2 extra brave men – Vaclav Sura and Petr Blazek, who are to cross the Siberian Baikal lake on foot, by so-called unsupported style. All of their belongings (food included) will be pulled by those two man on sledges. The trail leads from the south peak of the lake to the north peak and it si ‘mere’ 650 km long, which should take them 4 to 5 weeks to conquer. The slight problem is that the temperatures during this time go as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. Only one such expedition has been done in the past, so if the Czech one is succesfull it will be a great victory.

Sablikova image/ www.ceskenoviny.com imageNot long after the Olympic games began the Czechs have already won their first gold medal.  The 22-year-old speed skater, Martina Sablikova, conquered a  3,000-meter long race like it was a piece of cake. But the real piece of cake was waiting for her at the Czech House in Vancouver, fashionably shaped as an ice-skating ring with an image of a speed-skater in the middle.  The cake of just the sweet ‘snack’ ,however. Sablikova also received a price of 1,5 million Czech crowns and a one-year-long free supply of Pilsener Urquell!

Congrats, Martina! [click to continue…]

atomic bomb www.radio.cz imageDoes the name Georg Placzek ring the bell? No? Don’t feel bad because it is a name unknown to many Czechs. Mr. Placzek is known mostly in America, since he was (the only Czech!) present for the detonation of the 1st nuclear bomb, which he had also helped to build.

Radio Prague wrote a very nice overview of Placzek’s life and you will be surprised to find out in what ways was he connected to names like Charles Darwin, Neils Bohr, Otto Frish and other famous scientists (click here to read the complete article).

CZ: Rika vam neco jmeno Georg Placzek? Ne?

Milena Dvorska www.ceskenoviny.cz image Earlier this weak died one of my favorite Czech actresses – Milena Dvorska. Her acting career began in 1954 when she was accidentally discovered by a famous Czech actor, Jan Werich. Her persona impressed Werich so much that he picked her to be a fellow actress in a famous Czech fairytale “Byl jednou jeden kral” (Once upon a time there was a king). The movie was an instant success and it did not take Milena long to say good-bye to her nursing career and devote herself to the life of acting. [click to continue…]

One of you guys discovered this great video presentation on the transformation of Czechoslovakia since the end of the Cold War and its impact on international business. The presentation is done by a professor (Peter Petrik) who was born and raised in Czechoslovakia (today Slovakia) and who not only knows his history very well but can also give you some personal insight on it.

CZ: Jeden z vas, ctenaru, objevil vyborne video zabyvajici se transformaci byvaleho Ceskoslovenska od konce studene valky a jaky tato transformace mela efekt na mezinarodni obchod.

Czechmatediary with Vaclav KlausNow that you guys know my husband and I actually got through the security check point, let me tell you the details on how it went inside the embassy and how I got to meet the president.

We entered a room filled with about 200 people which led to yet another large room which was filled with about 300 anxious visitors. You could feel the excitement in the air and you could also smell some good Czech cookin’. A few minutes after we surveyed our new surroundings we saw a little commotion in the other room – the president was already giving a speech!! Could we see him? No. Could we hear what was he saying? No. But I am sure it was to the point. Since it was a day after the president had signed the Lisbon treaty  he probably touched on that amazing milestone as well in his speech, but once again, I can only guess, since I did not hear a word.
