I am actually not Czech but I am a study abroad student from Northern California! I am here studying in Prague till December 20th. I just thought I would send you a message asking if you have any suggestions about travels in the Czech Republic or even Prague itself. Today we went to Cesky Krumlov and it was beautiful!!
If you have any thoughts or suggestions about traveling or important facts about you culture, I would love to hear them! I am also intrigued by the fairy tale you posted— are there any more you’d recommend?

Cesky Krumlov is beautiful, you also HAVE to visit Kutna Hora – that is my favorite town. Tabor and Telc are also very beautiful. Click on the ‘traveling around Czech” category and you will get more info on these things.
I am glad you are enjoying those fairy-tales. I have a category called “Czech and Slovak folk tales” which has many more such children stories. I will be happy to get more feedback on these from you!
Also, when you are done with your studies in Prague, would you be able to do a guest post about your experience as a foreign student in Prague? That would be absolutely awesome!!!

My great grandparents (my mother’s mother’s parents) came to the U.S. from what they called Bohemia, Austria in the 1890′s. My grandmother used to recite two nursery rhymes in Bohemian:
One was with her fist drawing a circle in our hands, and the translation started “I am stirring the pot”, and the other had to do with a shoemaker and she pounded on the soles of our feet.
Where can I find the full texts in Czech and english?

I’m very thankful to find your blog. I spent the past three years teaching English in Czech and met my husband there. Now we are living in the US and it is quite a challenge to find anything Czech to help him feel more at home. I was wondering if you have any idea how to get good krokety here? It seems they don’t exist. Your recipe section is very helpful as well. I’m hoping to try my hand at making tartarska, and hopefully figuring out some other things as well. Thanks again

Ahoj Tanja I haven’t tried the krokety yet, but I did manage to make Smazeny Kurzeci Rizek, brabmorovy salat, a tatarska omacka for dinner last night. I’m not much of a cook, but my husband said it tasted pretty good anyway. If you feel like being entertained you can check out my blog post about it. Nedavno jsem se totiz pristehovala do Bostnu a rada bych navazala kontakt s ostatnimi Cechy zijici v teto oblasti. I recently visited Praha as a tourist, it is a very beautiful city.
I am writing because I would like to donate a book about the city to anyone who would like it!
In English it’s called: “The Seven Churches, A Gothic Novel of Prague”, by Milos Urban (1999) – it is translated into English.
I doubt that most Americans would be interested in this book, as (obviously!) it mentions several of the churches of Prague, as well as other buildings and areas of the city, and its history.
The back cover describes the story as follows:
Written in the style of a literary thriller, but with an intriguing historical, even supernatural, mystery at its core. It is set in the medieval New Town of Prague, a quarter of the city with a number of Gothic churches. Here K, a misfit policeman subject to extraordinary visions, witnesses a bizarre incident followed by a series of strange murders. K, obsessed by the Middle Ages and repelled by modern society, finds himself increasingly drawn into the shadowy world of others who seem to be trying to reconstruct the ‘golden age’ of Prague during the reign of Charles IV in the modern-day city. As he digs deeper, evidence emerges to suggest that the murders are being committed by an assasin whose motives are rooted deep in the city’s past….”

I’ve just finished reading a book called “ME, MYSELF AND PRAGUE
An unreliable guide to Bohemia” from Australian author Rachael Weiss.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It’s funny and witty and it’s very interesting to learn about this “living in other country” topic from the “other side”.
Bought it in the Kindle store for about $13. One of best $13 I’ve ever spent.

I know about annual Czech festival in West, Tx.
I’ve never attended one but there is one I assure you. I’ve been told by quite a few people when driving my 18 wheeler through Tx.
I know there are a few other annual Czech festivals elsewhere but I’m not sure where. I’d try to google it.
My gram was czeckoslavakian and she made a yummy egg noodle dish with buttered breadcrumbs seasoned with cinnamon and nutmeg. I loved this and watched her make it only once. Wondering if you might have a recipe. My gram was fabulous!
@Carol; @Linda There is an annual Czech festival in West, Tx. I’ve never attended one but a few people told me about this and there is also a billboard on I-35 with dates and all.

I am not Czech, but I taught English at Gymnazium Boskovice for one year (2001-02) and still miss both the school, the people, the town, and the country. I’m writing to you now because I’m soon going to audition again for the Portland Christmas Revels, an annual Christmas/Winter Solstice production I’ve been in for seven years. (The first show I was in was directed by Stepan Simek. theatre professor at Lewis and Clark.) This year the show’s theme is “Christmas in Bohemia” and I think I would have a leg up if I could sing a song in Czech. (My pronunciation is pretty good even though I only acquired a vocabulary of 100 words or so.) I have all the Czech song books out that the library has; the one with the most interesting music is a collection of songs by Janacek. Unfortunately, the words are all in Czech, and I need to know what I’m singing. If I picked out some that appealed to me musically, could I come to your house at your convenience with the book and ask you to translate a few for me? Alternatively, do you know of any of his songs with words both in Czech and English?
If this sounds like an incredible imposition on your time (which it probably is) just say so, but I felt I had to at least ask.

I ain’t no professional translator by any means but I subtitled a few Czech movies for my wife and she even understood

Where are you located and do you have a Czech festival annually? We live in Raleigh and would love to attend an event like that.
