About

Tanja and Czech president Vaclav Klaus for Czechmate DiaryHi, my name is Tanja (you can reach me on Facebook here) and I am the creator of this blog. I have been living in the United States since 1998 and for about past 2 years I have had an itch to be helpful to society. I thought about going back to school and becoming a nurse – but I hate blood; I thought about getting a teaching credential – but I hate brats; I even thought about becoming a firewoman – but I am terribly scared of heights. And fire for that matter. Then, one evening I had a revelation: CZECHMATE DIARY! THAT’S IT! If you want to read more about my life click here, otherwise here it is in a nutshell:

Czechmate diary is created specifically for two reasons:

1. to connect and re-connect the Czechs and Slovaks with their Bohemian roots

2. to conquer the world via Bohemian influences

What will it do for you:

1. it will entertain you

2. it will educate you

3.it will feed you – Czech style (i.e. recipes)

4. it will find you a Czech buddy to chat with

Ahoj,

No preci Czechmate diary! Cesi vsude na svete, at ziji kde ziji, si skrze Czechmate diary budou moci uchovat jejich rodne koreny a kulturni dedictvi. Jestlize se chcete dozvedet vice o mem zivote, kliknete zde.

Haha, no co my vieme, mozno nam este z Bieleho domu zamavas:)

Tanja June 15, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Hi everybody!
I am just browsing around here and I guess that I like your website Tatjana. It`s great to talk to others whose are abroad as me. I am living in Ireland now and time is though especially when you get 1 dry day per the whole year:) yep Ireland is wet and very cold…But few years ago I was living in Sydney(Australia) and that was the life-style I love. Now I am thinking about take a big chance and go to Canada for good ,but I have no clue what should I do as a first, because I am married and have to look after both of us ,that make everything a bit harder in terms of visa and job. As everybody knows on student visa you can not survive for long and work illegal in states or Canada -no way. So if somebody could advice me or help me how to get a job before I `ll arrive in Canada…?? I appreciate your ideas! Thank you mates

Tanja June 27, 2009 at 7:22 pm

Hi Luke!

Wow, you have traveled the world it seems like! That’s great! I have got two suggestions for you: you can leave a similar comment at the Czechmate Diary forum and you can also register for this blog via email and that way you will receive the list of Czech/Slovak contacts in Canada. And maybe you can ask those people?

Good luck!

Tanja

Shawna Birnbaum August 11, 2009 at 2:21 pm

Ahoj!

I’m glad I found this site while searching for Czech recipes. I am Asian-American living in Los Angeles, but my husband is Czech-Austrian from Jihlava. I will return to this website many times in the future, I am sure. Great work! :)

Shawna

Tanja August 11, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Ahoj! Wow, what a diverse marriage – that’s great! Please, do come back, Czech recipes are my specialty :) )

Vlastimil August 11, 2009 at 6:40 pm

Shawna, many Austrian are of Czech origin. So your husband may be Czech-Austrian Czech.

Shawna Birnbaum August 11, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Vlastimil: His great paternal grandfather was Austrian. I mention the “Austrian” part often because his surname is confusing for a lot of people (Birnbaum). He was born and raised in Jihlava, CZ (which is neither Bohemia nor Moravia, if I remember) — and now he lives in LA, married to a Cambodian / Chinese / Viet girl!

Vlastimil August 11, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Shawna, I was trying to apply an irresistable Czech humor. I see it did not work :)
I will be serious too, I am Czech-German (75%-25%).
My wife is Russian with traces of Polish blood
(93.75% – 6.25%). My kids are Russian-Czech-German-Polish ( 46.875% – 37.5% – 12.5% – 3.125%)…
I am sure some Chingis Khan brave warriors have been involved too (0.0000001%) :)

I like Tanja’s blog too, because my German part wants to become more Czech :)
BTW, Bohemia and Moravia are parts of CZ…

You mentioned you are a Cambodian / Chinese / Viet girl. You, your husband, me and my wife are a prove that the “globalization” has kicked in ages before it has even been “invented”…. ;)

Tanja August 12, 2009 at 12:19 am

haha, Vlastimil is being funny ;) )

I am glad you are back! Uz jsme te dlouho nevidel komentovat!!!

Vlastimil August 12, 2009 at 2:34 am

Shawna Birnbaum August 12, 2009 at 3:08 am

Oops! Sorry, I didn’t understand, Vlastimil. :) Hooray! Someday, we will all be one nation! Hahaha. I will try to get my husband to comment here, too.

Tanja August 12, 2009 at 10:56 am

Shawna – That would be great if you bring your husband into our ‘family’ here! I promise he will like it :)

Vlastimil – doufam, ze krize uz pominula

Vlastimil August 12, 2009 at 1:11 pm

Krize pominula pro me, ale jsem si jist, ze hodne lidi tady cekaji tezke casy, neco jako v CSR po Viteznem Unoru 1948 (I am not kidding…)

Kristyna August 16, 2009 at 5:17 pm

Ahoj vsichni,

Tanja August 16, 2009 at 6:54 pm

Ahoj Kristyno! No vidis, jak je ten svet malej, vid? ;)

Vlastimil August 16, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Kristyna, z toho si nic nedelej, ja prijel do Ameriky s Kolumbusem a o tomhle blogu vim mozna jen rok…..
A proc se skoro vsichni stehujete do Kalifornie? Vzdyt je tam vsude hneda trava a ten vas guvernator je hroznej :)

Lubos August 22, 2009 at 10:14 pm

Cau Tanja. Tento tvoj blog je super! Ja som tiez pred dakym mesiacom zacal jeden, pre slovenske varenie. Mrkni si ak chces (slovakcooking.com) Este tam mam len dakych 10 receptov, no ale to narastie rychlo. No a good luck s tvojou karierou!

Tanja August 22, 2009 at 10:44 pm

John August 27, 2009 at 8:45 pm

Vlastmil, remember that at one time ALL Czechs were Austrian. My great-grandfather’s naturalization papers identified him as a subject of Emperor Franz Josef.

I found this blog because I took a dumpling quiz and followed the “bouncing knedliky”. I consider myself fullly 50% Czech, my dad could claim 100% CZ, 100% American.

Vlastimil August 28, 2009 at 4:20 am

John…..100% CZ, 100% American it makes 200% of a person ;)

Kamila October 23, 2009 at 9:01 am

Tani – namet k zamysleni: kulturni rozdily v cesko-americkym manzelstvi. Jsem tady nova a zdravim vsechny! Super blog!

Jitka March 18, 2010 at 8:16 am

Dik.

Angel June 12, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Hi :o ) I’m glad I found this blog…I was looking for a recipe for Czech Potato Salad and stumbled upon it. I love the Recipe and the Blog. I don’t know how to speak Czech…yet :o ) But I am intent on learning it so when I visit where my roots came from (Bohemia/Moravia) I can ask questions and not be so much the tourist with two heads :o ) I look forward to keeping up with this blog…via google translate for now :o )

I found a “saying” in a book I read about Austria…I’m not totally sure it fits here and if it is offensive…someone please let me know :o )

AEIOU

Take care all and You’ll see me here (guess I should change my tag from “I love all things British to I love all things Czech/Bohemian” because that is fast becoming the case :o )

Angel.

mirek July 20, 2010 at 10:37 pm

Greg December 22, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Ahoj! Great site that I just found today. I will definitely come back. Can’t wait to make your Bublanina recipe for Christmas. Hope to meet more Czechs on here. I wasn’t born there, but have an interest to get back tomore of my roots.

Greg

Tanja December 27, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Hi Greg, I definitely support your idea about going back to Czech to find out more about your roots. Bublanina is a wonderful recipe but also try to make Vanilkove rohlicky (you can find it under the “recipes” category as well, namely under the “Christmas” tag) – they are the best Christmas recipe we have and it is also very easy. Merry Christmas!

Tony January 24, 2011 at 6:39 am

What a great site you have. Thank you for doing this..not many resources out there. I am an Amik married to my lovely Czech Wife (they are the best!) and we visit Czech every year(She and my Son for 6weeks-ish and myself 2). I was looking for some good advise regarding the language as I find that to be my one big struggle. Any good strategies and or learning materials anyone has found?

Tanja January 24, 2011 at 1:19 pm

Hi Tony! Glad you got a Czech wifie for yourself – they are the best – I am speaking from the experience here :)
As far as Czech language goes, my advice would be to completely immerse yourself in it. When you go back, try to speak ONLY Czech, even if you have to gesticulate some things for people to understand you.

Jose' Lara February 7, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Thank you, Tanja, for a lovely bramboracka recipe and for the idea that your site will be a good resource for my English language students here in Prague.

I’ve been here for a few years and look forward to retiring to a cottage in South Bohemia in 25 years or so. By then my Czech language skills should be very good.

I grew up in the Southeast U.S. and lived in many different places throughout the States before making the jump to the Czech Republic. As a heterosexual male, Czech women were a major impetus, of course.

The Czech lands feel like the home I never had before. The culture and lifestyles just seem so right!

I’m very much looking forward to reading more on your site, especially comments from folks with Czech and Slovak heritage who live elsewhere.

Marika February 19, 2011 at 9:00 pm

Mila Tanya,
YUM!
XO

Tanja February 19, 2011 at 9:09 pm

Ahoj Mariko! No vidis, jaka jses sikulka, ze jeste tak hezky cesky pises! Ani bych nepoznala, ze jsi vyrostla v Americe. No jo, pohadky, to je naprosty zaklad! Ktera je tvoje nejoblibenejsi?

Vlastimil February 20, 2011 at 4:47 pm

Tanja February 20, 2011 at 9:02 pm

no to mas Vlastimile pravdu. Detstvi v Cechach uz bude jen takovy zamlzeny sen…

Marika February 21, 2011 at 7:16 am

PS:
Bezvadny film co jsem nedavno videla a doporucuji je Little Otik – Otesanek. Je to na Netflix a je to fajn!

Vlastimil February 21, 2011 at 8:47 am

Marika, bez legrace by nebylo zivota ;)

Vlastimil February 21, 2011 at 8:52 am

Marika February 21, 2011 at 5:36 pm

Vlastimil,
:P PPP
to je pravda.

Marika February 21, 2011 at 5:38 pm

Katuska March 18, 2011 at 1:42 pm

Ahoj Tanjo,

Moc me to inspirovalo. Kde vlastne zijes v USA?

Katka

vlastimil March 21, 2011 at 7:37 am

Katko, neni mentalita Rakusaku podobna mentalite Cechu?

Tanja March 21, 2011 at 11:21 am
