What is attracting so many Czech and Slovak families to Portland that there are enough students for a whole school?

I think that they have a big Czech community there plus the weather is similar to the one in Czech?

Well, I never agreed with Slovaks and Czechs who try to create a “little Czechoslovakia” in America. It holds the same with Mexicans, etc. Why the hell did they move in here? I would say it would be better if kids went to american speaking preschool, if they have such opportunity, to learn English really well from the beginning. I assume they will be speaking English in grammar school, high school and college as well. I don’t see the point.

I see your point Ivette, I am all for integration. But I just think it gives the little kids good Czech foundations because once they are in school it will be only English…which they will learn in couple of months no problem. I saw that happen.

… ja by som takuto skolku privitala.

Gabi, lately I saw a documentary. It was about 3 hours long and many new studies of babies were presented. A baby has a universal ability to learn whatever language by the age 10 months. After that babies learn languages quickly as well but never with such ease. So why take that away from them and wait until they are 6? Well, I’m a science gall and when we decided to have babies, I never took any shortcuts in raising them and although it was tiring at times, whenever I was talking to them, it was always in both languages.

Ivette, I feel like I have to chime in here.
I would love to have a school like this in my area. I am a full-blooded Czech, married to an American. I’ve lived in America for almost 13 years and if you asked my husband he’d tell you how “Americanized” I am. I feel very strongly about people learning and using the language of the country they live in. If it wasn’t for my accent, you’d probably never guess I wasn’t born here. I went to college here, earned a nursing degree …………
This said, I have two children now and my entire family still lives in the Czech Republic. Of course the kids are fluent in English since that’s the language I use to talk to pretty much everybody around us. It is Czech that I am having a hard time with, especially since I’ve lived here for so many years prior to having had my children and never had the need to speak my native language unless I called my family in CR.
I have to admit that your comment about taking shortcuts in raising children seems inappropriate to me. Many moms who read this blog are the only Czech-speaking person their kids have. I’m sure they would love to have a school that would encourage their children to learn their foreign-parent’s native language on top of being a fluent English speaker.

I am busy now trying to save the old Czech Hall in Oklahoma City that my Czech grandfather built 90 years ago with the OKC Czech community. If I succeed we will hopefully have a Czechoslovak Cultural Center with Beer Garden. The idea of kids only 10 months old being introduced to Czech in OKC is interesting. There are an estimated 250,000 Oklahomans of Czech heritage, many who might be interested in introducing their kids to the family heritage. I figure the beer will pay for the other activities. We will include a Remaissance Marionette Theatre for the whole family and perhaps that would also be a good place to introduce Czech language to children? So, who wants to come, drink a beer and teach some Czech and Slovak? Dwight
