And the most popular Czech name is……./ A nejpopularnejsi ceske jmeno je…..

cute baby google imageCan you guess, what is currently the most popular Czech name? Girls are most often named by Tereza and the most popular boy name is Jakub. ‘Tereza’ has been winning the name charts for 11 years now (!!), while ‘Jakub’ won the ‘Best of’ prize for the second time this year.  According to the Czech statisticians themselves the old fashioned Czech names such as Anezka, Amalie or Kveta are going through a great comeback, while nontraditional  names such as Sofie, Vanesa or Liliana are also popular. The boy names on the other hand have forerunners such as Oliver, Kristian, Vendelin or Florian. Here is the full list:

Je to zajimave, divci jmena zni jakoby byly ciziho puvodu a chlapecka jemna zni jako ryze ceska…Zeby devcata uz od narozeni chtely byt neco “extra” ?:))

Number 5 is great… And number 8, too. (My sister!)

It is strange and nice to see my name on a “top” anything list; in the States I cannot find any personalized items and most people say, “Adela? That was my great-great-great aunt’s name, in the 1920’s,” if they have even ever heard it before.

    =)

Congrats to both of you! The name queens :)!
What is Adela in English, anyway? Is it Adele? or Adeline?

It’s just Adela (uh-del-ah). People pronouce it wrong all the time. I am pleasantly surprised when someone new actually gets it right!

Really? So Americans have exactly the same name? With the same spelling?? (I guess I am repeating myself here..I just can’t believe it!)

To tell you the truth, I am kind of surprised that Tereza is number one, I thought I would be Emma or Eliska (all of my friend’s kids are named that way). And Jan? That name is immortal!!!! I myself have about 20 Jans in my family…

I know many Adele’s here in Australia. I suppose Adele vs. Adela is the same as Paulina vs. Pauline. Is Jan John or Ian? I suppose maybe it’s just a variation of the same name.
I disagree with Vlastimil. All the boys’ names except for Vojtech (and Vlastimil (-; ) sound very international to me.
I am currently struggling to find a name for my second daughter. I love old Czech names and I wish they translated better into English.

    Any suggestions?

    Vlasta, Sarka, Libuse, Jana, ….

Congrats on your second daughter!! Girls are the best 🙂
How about Drahomira or Kvetoslava??? That would translate ‘great’ into English!!! 🙂

The answer is pretty simple. The most popular Czech name in the last 50 years was always Vole Vole, nothing else.
