How many of you still do this: / Kdo z vas stale dela nasledujici:

Although I have been living in the United States for over 10 years now, the longer I live here, the more I realize how so very Czech I still am. What do I mean? I mean that I still keep doing (or not doing) some – to many people –  quite strange things. For instance, I still don’t eat peanut butter and I hate Mint chocolate chip cookies. To me you either chew a mint gum or you have a cookie or a piece of chocolate, but please, let’s not mix ALL of them together! And my issues with peanut butter? Don’t get me started…

Taky si spagety topim v louzi kecupu a kocce davam pit pouze mlecko. A co vy? Jakym “blaznovstvim” trpite vy??

So my question is this: who else beside me does these following “weird” things?

Do you still do this?

    Ahoj!

To to jses teda pekne kosmopolitni s tim burakovym maslem! Vzdyt to je tak “neceska” chut!!!

You are quite the cosmopolita women as far as peanut butter goes! It’s such an un-czech taste!!

  • Tanja December 15, 2008, 11:48 am

Totally, Bitter Chocolate is a cosmopolitan woman :))

Have you tried eating peanut butter and apple slices? Or peanut butter and nutella? I do not like peanut butter cookies but a sandwich or with fruit is good to me.

  • Fanda December 15, 2008, 6:32 pm

    1 – 4 ano
5 ne (Citrus cola je nejlepsy!)
    6 ano!

  • Tanja December 15, 2008, 10:40 pm

To Jana: I did try to cover up the taste with apple slices and no luck for me…But I think nutella ought do the job! I gotta try it ASAP
To Fanda: I am so glad that someone else gives his cat milk to drink! By the way, our cat turned out to be lactose intolerant so I buy her lactose free milk 😉

I’m in the opposite situation – as an American who spends time in the Czech republic, I will never be able to put ketchup on pasta or pizza (ugh!). I’ll take peanut butter ON mint chocolate chip cookies with pleasure, just so that I don’t have to go near pasta with ketchup 😉

Tanja, you commented on my blog about Moravia a couple of days ago. To answer your question, no I don’t quite speak Czech fluently, but I’m working on it! I study Slavic linguistics (Russian first, then Czech), so I’m trying to improve my Czech now.

  • Tanja December 16, 2008, 11:36 am

    Hi Julia,

I finally get to meet you!
Just wait, a little more time in the Czech Republic and you will be adding catchup into your coffee…

haha! This is a topic that often comes up in our house. Do my husband and his family do certain things because they’re Czech or because it’s just a quirk in their family?! I really like this article and the comments.

It is true, Czech people tend not to like peanut butter–that is just the way it is. But what I don’t understand is that many of the czechs who I know eat “krupky” which to me are like cheese puffs, but you replace the cheese taste with a peanut butter flavor? Explain that?

  • Ladka December 17, 2008, 7:09 pm

I love ketchup on pasta, hate peanut butter, don’t have cat but would give him milk for sure, sew missing buttons on my husbands shirts and don’t really drink coke.
Another thing that I guess makes me still very Czech – I don’t like when in restaurant you ask for water and you usually get more ice then water.

  • Tanja December 17, 2008, 9:25 pm

To Katie: Hi! What else does you husband’s family does that is “weird” to you?
To Adrienne: hmm…good point…I love “krupky” but I hate peanut butter….Oh great, now I hate krupky too!!!
To Ladka: Yes, ice water is a little too hard-core for me too!

OMG, this is a fun subject. Love love love the ketchup on pasta. Now how weired is this. I do not have to have ketchup on anything else – french fries, etc. Now my husband (who is soooo American) could have ketchup on anything and everything, but he would rather eat glass then put it on his pasta. My kids have been eating spaghetti and ketchup since they could eat it, and ofcourse shredded cheese is a must too. We had my daughter’s friends over a few month back and had pasta for dinner. You should have seen their eyes when I put the ketchup on my kids plates and asked if they wanted any too. Of course the answer was NO. Well, two month later, one of the girls eats nothing on her pasta but ketchup. It took a while for her mom to figure this one out. 🙂
As to the rest, I still do the cloth, sew and sometimes feel like that about soda. Don’t really drink it though. We don’t have a cat but when we get outside visitors they get milk, fully loaded, none of the skim milk stuff. My kids hate peanut butter, since we never made that for them which my mother in law still does not understand. I can eat it with apples when I try to be healthy for snacks from time to time. I usually buy a small jar and end up trowing most of it away since I don’t eat it fast enough to finish before it goes bed.
Keep up the great posts and surveys.

So they are putting ketchup on their pasta now? That’s great! As the CMD under-title says: “Small Bohemians Steps to World Domination” – and it starts with ketchup!!! Good work “agent” Lenka !!:)

Za chvilku si bude vyzadovat ketcup na spagety is samotnej americkej president!!!

Vitejte v klubu. Nesnasim arasidove maslo, moje dite taktez. Cokolada a mata mi nevadi, ale stale si radeji dam hranolky s majonezou nez kecupem. Pijeme mineralni vodu radeji nez ruzne sody, a vsiml si nekdo toho velike rozdilu napr. v Coca Cole ci Fante v USA a EU?

I wish I could do more than one answer to this pole. No ketchup on my pasta! And mint and chocolate or even ice cream and mint is a really bad idea!

Peanut butter is good, though a little dry. I have a (czech) friend who won a bet that he’s going to eat a whole baguette with PB without taking a sip of liquid and guess what… he won 50Kc! This was probably ten or so years ago. 😀
Try sunflower butter from Trader Joe’s instead.

Adrienne: I don’t think Krupky has much peanut butter in it. I’d say it just has pieces of peanuts and the salt makes it so good! The problem with peanut butter on the other hand is that it’s hard to tell if it’s sweet or salty.

  • Raffy September 14, 2009, 5:35 am

Most peanut butter I know tends to be sweet. However, the peanuts have some flavor of their own, giving a savory influence.

And most bottles of peanut butter have a little of salt for taste.

  • Andrea September 14, 2009, 9:11 am

Peanut butter nemusim, i kydz nemuzu rict, ze bych ho nesnasela. Krupky miluju. Kecup na spagetach taky. Ale taky mam rada mint chocolate chip icecream. Mintchip chookies nemusim, ponevadz me nechutnaji zadny cookies. A kola v Cesku chutna mnohem lip nez tady. Ice water me hrozne stve, jenom z toho cloveka boli hlava.

  • Jana B September 14, 2009, 2:52 pm

Yes, that’s the problem. Peanut butter should decide if it wants to be sweet or salty. 🙂

  • Nikola September 14, 2009, 2:55 pm
