I myself have read a current Czech novel and although it was well written, if found myself feeling depressed when I was done. So, I am like you - I like to read hopeful things :)As far for the "in RICE" expression, I think that being stuck in some overcooked rice is just way worse than being stuck in mashed potatoes or even overcooked pasta)...I don't know..:)

Hi Mary!

If you are looking for an uplifting, positive and hopeful book then the Czech books are not your cup of tea..;) Actually, I take it back – the hopelessness and negativity started probably around 1960′s so anything before that should be fine…<br

In a land where so much literature seems to deal with absurdities, either one is possible, I guess. I'm a very literal-minded girl, myself, and absurdities don't much interest me. I prefer to read something positive, hopeful, and uplifting. Anyone have any suggestions?

I guess I’m getting the giggles from eating too much pizza too late at night, but I wonder if Czech literature is really in the rice (why not bramborova kase or spagety?), or in a crisis?
