My great-grandfather was involved in the fight for independence, he was from Havlovice, near Domazlice. He was involved in working with the rulers at the time, which was Austria. He ended up dying in the Czech Republic, but he dreamed of a free country. Also a relative of ours was Jan Sladky, who lead a peasant rebellion againt the rulers who took away thier 24 rights in the 1600's, he was exected, but is a national hero. My great-grandma packed up her children and came to the US in 1903. They actually started thier own Czech town with a bilingual school in Kewaunee County, WI. My grandpa grew up in this town, but being Czech in the US could be a challenge, Grandpa had game wardens take his gun. He actually changed his name to Jim, because people could not pronounce his Czech name. They tried to be more American, but the cool thing is they kept the culture. My dad was raised Czech and dad has passed on the food and culture to us.

This is so true the fight for independence went on for such a long time. I'd like to read more, particularly if you are researching your heritage. My wife and I travel to Czech in May, partly to go see the two villages her grandparents came from (1st wave of immigration according to your paper). These are Pístina and P?íbraz near the Austrian border.

Nice job Damian! I’d like to read more, particularly if you are researching your heritage.
